Hello everyone,

Halloween is almost here! In just two days we will begin our special week of Halloween party classes. So get your costume ready and come on over for some fun and games. I won’t tell you what my costume is yet. It’s a surprise so you’ll have to come and see for yourself, if you’re brave enough. It’s very scary, so try not to run away screaming!

Why do people wear costumes during Halloween? Where did this crazy idea come from? This custom goes back about 500 years, and began in the Celtic countries of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Halloween was time when people believed that dead people’s spirits would come back to this world. It is a similar idea to “Obon” in Japan. During this time people would dress up as ghosts or mummies to protect themselves from the dead. People went from house to house in costumes, usually singing songs in exchange for food. That is where the modern custom of “trick or treat” comes from. Children don’t do that here in Japan but in some countries, such as Ireland, it’s very common. I remember dressing up every year and going from house to house in my neighbourhood with my brothers and friends. You ring the doorbell, hold out your bag and shout “Trick or treat!” This means you have to give us  a treat, or else we will play a trick on you. Of course all of our neighbours were well prepared. They would usually give us sweets, such as chocolate bars, and gummy candy. Sometimes the more health conscious parents would give us fruit and nuts. We even got toothpaste one year. They were worried about our teeth after all that candy! By the end of the evening we had a plastic bag full of sweets. It took days to eat them all. So, just like easter, it isn’t a healthy holiday for kids, but it’s a fun evening! We usually finish the night with fireworks or a bonfire if there is a field nearby. That’s why Japan’s summer festivals remind me of Halloween.

ハロウィンが近づいてきました！あとたったの二日で特別なハロウィンウィークが始まります。

ですからみなさんコスチュームを用意して、ゲームなどを楽しみに来てください

まだ私のコスチュームが何かは秘密ですサプライズに取っておくので、もし勇気がある人は、来て自分自身の目で確かめてください。とっても恐ろしいので、叫んで逃げないようにしてくださいね！

どうしてハロウィンの時には皆仮装するのでしょうこのおかしなアイデアはどこから来たのでしょう

この風習は約500年前に遡り、アイルランド、スコットランド、ウェールズで始まりました。

ハロウィンは人々が死者の魂がこの世界に戻ってくる日だと考えられていました。

仮装をして家を周り、普通は食べ物と引き換えに歌を歌いました。これが現代のトリック・オア・トリートの始まりです。

子供たちは日本ではこれを行いませんが、国によってはたとえばアイルランドのような国では、とても有名な風習です。

私も毎年仮装をして近所の家を兄弟や友達と周り歩いたのを覚えています。

ドアベルを鳴らし、バッグをにいりしめて「トリック・オア・トリート！」と叫びます。

これは相手にお菓子かなにかをくれないと意地悪するぞ、という意味です。

もちろん近所の誰もがしっかり用意をしていました。いつもチョコレートバーやグミのような甘いお菓子をくれます。

たまにもっと健康志向のご両親がフルーツやナッツをくれたりもします。ある年には歯磨き粉をもらったこともあります。

たくさんの甘いお菓子をもらったあとに虫歯になるのを心配したのでしょう！

夜が終わる頃にはビニール袋がお菓子でいっぱいになります。

全部食べきるのに数日かかります。なので、イースターの時のように、子供たちにとってはあまり健康的な祝日ではありませんが、楽しい夜です！

たいてい最後に、もし近くに空き地があれば花火や焚き火をして終わります。

そういうわけで日本の夏祭りはハロウィンを思い出させます。
