Hello everyone!

With the Hario camping weekend coming next month I thought it would be fun to reflect on camping memories both new and old. Ever since I was a young child I have enjoyed camping and the outdoors. Luckily I grew up in Canada which is known for it’s thousands of parks, rivers and lakes to go camping. You can travel for hundreds of kilometers and find a place to camp where it’s just you and the wilderness! I have been lucky enough to camp in places with beautiful scenery and even had run-ins with bears, moose and beavers! A true Canadian experience.

A few years ago I began training to become an arborist. An arborist is someone who knows about the health and maintenance of trees and other woody plants. This was incredibly interesting to me and not only did we have classes indoors such as biology and physics but we spent 2 days a week in the wilderness! A big part of our training was learning how to safely climb trees in order to work on them. So we needed ropes, harnesses, pulleys, chainsaws, safety gear, all kinds of items. On average an arborist would carry with them up a tree about 35kg of equipment.

While classes were always interesting, most of us agreed that the highlights of outdoor training was the camping and campfire cooking! We would try to make more and more complicated and tasty meals to see who the best campfire cook is. While we started with simple toasted sandwiches, by the end of our second school year we were having barbecued lobster and stuffed peppers. Yummy!

みなさんこんにちは！

HARIOキャンプが来月に迫っておますね。子供の頃からわたしはキャンプやアウトドアを楽しんできました。運の良いことに、わたしはキャンプをするためのたくさんの公園や川、湖を持つカナダで育ちました。何百キロも旅をし、自分と自然しかないようなキャンプをする場所を見つけることができます。わたしはとてもラッキーで美しい景色の中でキャンプをしたり、クマやヘラジカ、ビーバーなどと遭遇したこともあります。カナダならではの体験です。

数年前わたしはアーボリストになろうと研修をはじめました。アーボリストとは木や木本植物の健康状態や管理に詳しい人のことです。これは私には非常に面白く、室内での生物学や物理学の授業だけでなく、週に二回自然の中で二日間を過ごしました。授業の大部分は作業するためにいかに安全に木に登るかを学ぶことでした。そのため私達はロープやハーネス、滑車、チェーンソー、安全器具あらゆる種類の道具が必要でした。平均では一人のアーボリストは一本の木と約35キロの器具を運びます。

授業はいつも面白かったのですが、ほとんどのみんなが野外訓練の目玉はキャンプとキャンプファイアーで作る料理だと思っていました。私達は誰が一番キャンプファイアー料理が上手か見るためにもっともっと複雑で美味しい食事を作ろうとしました。簡単なトーストサンドウィッチから始めましたが、学校生活二年目の終わりにはバーベキューロブスターやピーマンの肉詰めを食べましたおいしかった！
