So last Sunday in Australia it was Australia Day. Every year on the 26th of January, people all around Australia get together and celebrate being Australian or living Australia. Australia Day has changed over the years. It was originally the celebration for emancipated convicts and has now evolved into a celebration that refelcts Australia and its people. The date is important because in 1788 on the 26th of January, Capain Arthur Phillip and his eleven convict ships from Great Britain arrived at Sydeney Cove and raised the Union Jack to signal the beginning of the colony. Some years later in 1804, people began referring to the 26th of January as First Landing Day or Foundation Day and such people celebrated by drinking and having anniversary dinners. Then in 1818 on the thirtieth anniversary, the colony was named Australia.

先週の土曜日はオーストラリアの日でした。毎年、1月26日はオーストラリア全土でこの日を祝います。オーストラリアの日はこれまで変わって変わってきました。1788年のこの日にイギリスの艦隊がシドニーコープに到着し、イギリスの植民地となりました。1804年には船が初めて到着した記念日、国家記念日となり、お酒や食事をして記念日を祝うようになりました。そして1818年の３０年目の記念日に、この植民地がオーストラリアと名付けられました。

Today many Australians follow the traditions set in 1804 and have celebratory drinks and anniversary dinners. But traditions have also evolved to reflect present day. For example, in many cities around Australia there are parades organised to celebrate Australia Day or special events such as concerts and festivals. Also some place also hold special sporting events, such as Australia Day cricket matches, football matches, Aussie rules football or rugby matches. Although there are many events and celebrations held to celebrate Australia day, some people just like to have a BBQ or relax on the beach with friends and family.
