Hello everyone,

There’s just one more week to go until Halloween week here at Hario. So, get your costume ready and give us a big scare (or make us laugh) next week. We’ll be in costumes too, so don’t be scared! Why should you dress up for Halloween? Why do people all over the world put on costumes on October 31st? Halloween actually began a very long time ago, almost 2,000 years to the time of the old tribes in Ireland. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, mostly in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31st, they celebrated a festival called “Samhain”, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. To commemorate the event, priests built huge bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic gods. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. Because they believed that the dead spirits were returning to Earth, the people dressed like them. And so, that is why people dress up in costumes for Halloween. Of course, these days, people don’t just dress up in scary costumes. They can be anything, such as their favorite superheroes or anime characters. In Ireland, people also have big bonfires in fields to celebrate Halloween. It’s also a time when people set off fireworks, which usually happens in Japan during summer festivals. HARIOでハロウィンウィークが始まるまであと1週間になりましたね！！

みなさんがどんな衣装を着てきて、驚かしてくれるのか（はたまた笑わしてくれるのか）楽しみで仕方ありません

 

私たちもコスチュームを着て授業をしますが、怖がらないでくださいね

ところで、なぜハロウィンにコスチュームを着るか知っていますか？？

なぜ世界中で10月31日には特別な衣装を着るという習慣が広まったんでしょうか？？

 

実はハロウィンの歴史はとても古く、2000年以上前の古いケルト民族にまで遡ります。

また2000年以上前にケルト民族が暮らしていた地域が現在のアイルランドだと言われています。

 

当時、イギリスとフランス北部で生活をしていた人々は、11月1日を新年として祝っていました。

この日は、夏季の終わりや収穫、闇の始まり、寒い冬の始まり　など、少しネガティブなイメージを連想させる日でした。

 

人々は当時、この新年の前日になると

「この世とあの世の境界線があいまいになる」と信じていました。

 

10月31日の夜には、Samhainというお祭りがあって、死者の魂が帰ってくると信じられており、

そのお祭りを記念して、司祭達が焚火を準備し作物や動物をケルトの神々への捧げものとしていました。

 

このお祭りの時に、人々が動物の装いをしてお互いの未来について占いなどをしており、

というのも、悪い魂が帰ってくるので同じ格好をしてなんとかやり過ごそうとしていたらしいのです。

 

これが現在のハロウィンのコスプレの起源だと言われています。

 

もちろん、最近のハロウィンは若者がそれぞれが好きな服装を着てわいわいしている様子をよく見ますが

 

私の故郷のアイルランドでは、焚火をして花火を楽しんだりして過ごしています。

ちょうど日本の夏みたいですね。
