Why are Jack O’lanterns a symbol of Halloween?

Hello everyone,

It’s Halloween week at last! Time to dress up in a terrifying costume and have fun all week here at Hario. We are having a great time so far. I’ve seen many weird and wonderful costumes on our students, so thanks for putting in the effort to make it an amazing Halloween. We’re making things as spooky as possible, with little candles lighting the stairs, spider webs all over the walls, and jack o’lanterns everywhere. Why do people hollow out pumpkins and carve faces into them? And why is this the symbol for Halloween? Halloween began in Ireland about 2,000 years ago as a festival to celebrate the Autumn harvest. It was believed that the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred on this night, allowing spirits to cross over. People carved frightening faces into vegetables like turnips and potatoes and lit them with candles to scare away evil spirits. Over the years, when Halloween spread into the USA, people began to use pumpkins, as they were larger and easier to carve. The “Jack O’Lantern” name comes from a Irish story about a man named Jack who tricked the devil multiple times. When Jack died, he was denied entry into both Heaven and Hell. The devil gave him a single burning coal to light his way through the eternal darkness, which Jack placed inside a carved-out turnip. This wandering, lantern-carrying spirit became known as “Jack of the Lantern”.

ついにハロウィン週間がやってきました

怖い仮装をして、ここハリオで一週間たっぷり楽しみましょう

月曜日からとても楽しい時間を過ごしています。生徒たちの奇妙で素晴らしい仮装をたくさん見かけました。素敵なハロウィンにするために頑張ってくれてありがとう。階段には小さなキャンドルを灯し、壁にはクモの巣を張り巡らせ、ジャック・オー・ランタンをあちこちに飾って、できる限り不気味な雰囲気を演出しています

ところで、なぜ人々はカボチャをくり抜いて顔を彫るのでしょう？そして、なぜそれがハロウィンの象徴になったのでしょうか？ハロウィンは約2000年前、アイルランドで秋の収穫を祝う祭りとして始まりました。この夜は、生者と死者の境界が曖昧になり、霊がこの世に現れると信じられていました。人々はカブやジャガイモに怖い顔を彫り、キャンドルを灯して悪霊を追い払おうとしました。やがてハロウィンがアメリカに広まると、より大きくて彫りやすいカボチャが使われるようになりました。

「ジャック・オー・ランタン」という名前は、ジャックという男にまつわるアイルランドの物語に由来します。ジャックは何度も悪魔を騙しましたが、死後、天国にも地獄にも入れてもらえませんでした。悪魔はジャックに、永遠の闇の中を照らすための燃える石炭を一つだけ与えました。ジャックはそれをくり抜いたカブの中に入れてランタンにし、さまよう霊となったのです。この霊が「ジャック・オブ・ザ・ランタン」と呼ばれるようになりました。
