What is an “equinox”?

Hello everyone,

We’re back after the “silver week” vacation last week. It consisted of two national holidays, the first of which was “old people’s day” on Monday the 18th, followed by the autumnal equinox on Saturday the 25th. It’s sad for some that the fall equinox fell on a Saturday this year, because many people don’t even work Saturdays. Equinox is the word meaning it’s exactly half way between the longest (June 21st) and shortest (Dec 21st) days of the year. There is another one in spring, called the vernal equinox. It’s around this time when Ireland, and some other northern countries bring in daylight savings, when they move the time forward or back by one hour. It can be confusing for people who forget about the time change and get up an hour early or late.

Have you been watching the rugby world cup? We’re getting closer to the exciting end of the group stages. Yesterday morning Ireland beat the defending champions South Africa in a very close match. Unfortunately, the match was at 4AM, so I didn’t get up early enough to watch it. That’s the problem with the world cup being held in France. Most of the matches take place in the middle of the night. Fortunately, Japan’s final group match against Argentina will kick off at 10PM here on Oct 8th. That could be the match that decides whether Japan make it through to the knockout stages, so it should be exciting. You’ll have to be a night-owl after that if you want to watch the quarter-finals!

皆さん、こんにちは！

先週はシルバーウィーク休暇でお休みでしたが、新しい週が始まりました!　先週は２つの休日があり、最初の休日は18日の”敬老の日”で25日は”秋分の日”でした　土曜日に祝日が重なってしまったので何とも残念でしたが　普通に土曜日はお休みなのにですよね秋分とは、1年で最も昼が長い日（6月21日）と最も昼が短い日（12月21日）のちょうど中間を意味する言葉である。春にも春分というのがありますね。アイルランドや他の北欧諸国がサマータイムを導入し、時間を1時間進めたり戻したりするのもこの頃です。時計を治すのを忘れて1時間早く起きたり遅く起きたりする人は、混乱しますね。

さあ皆さん、ラグビーワールドカップは見ていますか～？

グループステージもいよいよ大詰めですよ！昨日の朝、アイルランドは優勝候補の南アフリカを接戦の末に破ったんです

残念ながら、試合は午前4時からだったので、私は早起きして見ることはできなかったんです　ワールドカップがフランスで開催されることが問題なのです　ほとんどの試合が夜中に行われるのですよ　幸いなことに、日本代表のグループリーグ最終戦、対アルゼンチンは10月8日の夜10時にキックオフされます。皆さん、日本が決勝トーナメントに進めるかどうかを決める試合になるかもしれませんよ！準々決勝を見たければ、夜更かししましょう
