Hello and welcome to another week of my blog! This week I want to talk about the national flag of the UK, otherwise known as “The Union Jack”.

今週は”ユニオンジャック”でおなじみの、イギリス国旗についてお話します。

The Union Jack / The Union Flag

First, the flag isn’t technically called the “Union Jack”, but should rightfully be called the “Union Flag”, it is only known as the “Union Jack” when it is flown on a boat or at sea. But the name “Union Jack” became so commonly used, that in 1902 it was officially announced that either name was acceptable.

まずはじめに、イギリスの国旗はユニオンジャックとは正式には呼ばれておりませんでした。

ユニオンジャックという名前は海でボートが国籍を表すために用いられていましたが、

そこからとてもよく使われるようになったので1902年にどちらの名前も正式に使用されることが

許可されたという歴史的な背景が存在します。

The flag is comprised of the 3 flags representing England, Scotland, and Ireland combined when it was originally created in 1801. A version of the flag though had existed since 1606, created by James I when he inhered the thrones of England and Scotland and combined the 2 country’s flags.

現在のイギリスの国旗は、イングランド、スコットランド、アイルランドの3国を表すように上手に組み合わされていますが、

1606年にジェームズ1世がイングランドとスコットランドの国旗を合わせたものもまだ存在しています。

Today it represents 4 nations England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The reason Wales doesn’t make up any part of the flag is that when the flag was originally created Wales was considered part of England at the time and was not recognized as a separate country. Sorry, Wales!

現在では、イングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズと北アイルランドの4か国を表しておりますが、

ウェールズを表す部分はありません。

なぜかというと、当時ウェールズはイングランドの支配下にあったため、

イングランドの一部として国旗には描かれなったようです。ウェールズのみなさんごめんなさい
