Hello everyone,

The speech homework is here at last! We are giving the speeches out to our students this week so they can finally begin learning it and take the first steps toward creating a big performance. There is a different atmosphere in each class when I present the speech homework. First-timers don’t know what it is yet, so they are curious and interested to take a look at the homework. Students who have done one or two speeches before already know there is a long road ahead to learning it. Perhaps they want to improve on last year’s effort, so they are ready to challenge it again. Veterans who have already done several speeches over the years often let out a sigh that says, “Here we go again!” They are well aware of the work that goes into mastering the longer speeches and creating a good performance. The next few months will fly by, so get cracking on your speeches and good luck to all of you!

The past few days have seen some really exciting world cup matches. It was sad to see Cape Verde come close to a draw with Argentina, only to lose in extra time. Especially since one of Cape Verde’s players grew up and lives in my hometown of Dublin. One of his parents is from Cape Verde, so they sent him a mail asking him to play for them in the world cup. He didn’t understand it at first because he can’t speak Portuguese, but with some translation help he got the message, so one Irishman got to go to the world cup at least! Brazil are out thanks to Norway and England won an exciting match with Mexico, so I’m looking forward to the quarter finals!

ついにスピーチの宿題がやってきました！今週、生徒のみなさんにスピーチを配り始めています。これでようやく練習を始めて、大きな発表に向けた最初の一歩を踏み出すことができます。

スピーチの宿題を渡すとき、クラスごとに雰囲気がまったく違います。初めての生徒はまだ内容を知らないので、興味津々で宿題をのぞき込みます 1〜2回経験したことのある生徒は、これから長い道のりが始まることをすでに知っています。去年より良い発表にしたいと思っているのか、また挑戦する準備ができているようです。何度もスピーチを経験してきた“ベテラン”たちは、「またこの季節が来たか…」というようなため息をつくこともあります。長いスピーチを覚え、良い発表を作り上げるために必要な努力をよく知っているからです。

これから数か月はあっという間に過ぎていきます。スピーチの練習をしっかり始めて、みなさん頑張ってくださいね

ここ数日、ワールドカップの試合がとても盛り上がっています。カーボベルデがアルゼンチンと引き分け寸前までいきながら、延長戦で負けてしまったのは残念でした。特に、カーボベルデの選手の一人が私の故郷ダブリンで育ち、今も住んでいるからです。彼の両親の片方がカーボベルデ出身で、ワールドカップでプレーしてほしいとメールを送ったそうです。彼はポルトガル語が話せないので最初は理解できなかったのですが、翻訳の助けを借りて内容を理解し、少なくともアイルランド人が一人ワールドカップに行けたことになります
