Hey, so today is Tanabata. However this year there appears to be very few or no festivals organised to celebrate Tanabata due to the spread of COVID-19. But people can still write wishes and look back at Tanabata pictures from previous years.

What is Tanabata ?
Tanabata is a festival that has been held in Japan for many generations. It is the tale of two stars. One of the stars is called Orihime and the other is called Hikoboshi. The tale describes how the two stars fell madly in love and started to ignore their work. Because they ignored their work, the Heavenly King got angry and decided to separate the two lovers. However he took pity on them and allowed them to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month, when the skies are clear and a bridge is built across the Milky Way that separates the two.

When is Tanabata ?
Tanabata was originally celebrated on August 7th according to the Luna Calendar, however nowadays it is celebrated on July 7th.

How do people celebrate Tanabata ?
In many cities and towns throughout Japan, people celebrate Tanabata by attaching colourful pieces of paper to bamboo and writing a short message or wish. People write a wish and attach it to the bamboo in the hopes that that their wish may be granted. Also many places decorate streets and have small festivals to celebrate Tanabata, like in Shimizu.

みなさんこんにちは、ショーンです。今日は七夕ですね。普段ならお祭りなどがありますが、コロナの影響でほとんどなくなりました。

それでも、短冊に願いを込めたり、これまでの七夕の思い出を振り返ることはできます。

そもそも七夕ってなんでしょう

七夕は、日本に古くからあるお行事の一つで、ひこ星とおりひめの物語にちなんだものです。ひこ星とおりひめは恋に落ち、働かなくなり怠惰になってしまいます。怒った天の神様は、二人を引き裂くことを決めます。でもかわいそうに思った天の神様が、彼らを年に一度合わせてあげることにしました。７月７日の晴れた日に、天の川に橋がかかり、二人は合うことができるというストーリーです。

七夕はいつ？

七夕はもともとは太陽暦では８月７日でしたが、今は７月７日です。

どうやって祝う？

日本中で竹に願いをこめたカラフルな短冊を飾ります。また写真のような清水市のように街を飾ってお祭りをするところもあります。
