  How is your summer going? Are you coping in the heat and humidity? I’ve been going swimming a lot to stay cool. Actually, I’ve entered the Fuji City Swimming Championships which take place after the Obon holidays. It’s an open event; anyone can enter. I don’t think I can win because I’ve never been in a swimming race before. I have the modest goals of setting an official time and to not come last. Having short term goals and long term goals can be useful for motivation. At Hario, our students have lots of goals. For example, passing a rank of the PLS system or a grade in the Eiken test are important goals. So is the speech homework and contest. That isn’t the only kind of motivation. I swim because I enjoy it; it’s cool in the hot weather and it’s an adrenaline rush. This is called intrinsic motivation; you are motivated by enjoyment and interest of the thing itself, not any particular goal. I think this is true for our students too. They enjoy studying English and find it interesting, as a tool for communication and for learning about the world. I think to learn effectively you need both intrinsic motivation, because otherwise you won’t enjoy it, and clear goals to give you a timeframe and something to aim for. What are you study goals?

みなさん、こんにちは。

暑い夏をどうお過ごしですか。私は、涼しくなるためにプールに通っています。

実をいういと、8月に開かれる富士市の水泳大会に出場するんですこの大会は誰でも参加できる大会です。

私のような素人が勝てる大会ではないのですが目標は設定タイムを上回り、ビリにはならないことです。モチベーションを維持するために、短い期間での目標、長い期間の目標を設定するのは有効的です。HARIOでも生徒達はたくさんの目標をもっています。

例えばPLSのランクを合格すること、英検合格もあります。スピーチホークや、スピーチコンテスト出場や入賞も目標になりますね。ただこれらけがモチベーションの種類ではないのです。

 

私は楽しいから泳ぎます。

泳げば涼しくなりますし、アドレナリンがでます。これは「内発的動機付け」と呼ばれます。

目標がなくとも、楽しさや興味によりそれへの動機づけとなり、モチベーションがあがるのです。これはHARIOの生徒達にも言えることだと思います。彼らは英語を楽しんでいます。それがコミュニケーションツールとして、世界をしるためのツールとして面白いものだと気づきます。

私は、効果的に学習するには、この二つのモチベーション、動機づけが必要だと思います。

もし楽しくなかったら続かないでしょうし、ゴールがあれば計画的に進みながら、目標を達成できることでしょう。
