How’s your summer vacation going?

Hello everyone,

The summer vacation is in full swing and our summer morning classes are underway now. Students are brushing up on their grammar here in the mornings and they can take a one-to-one conversation lesson with Kevin or myself. For many students here in Japan the summer vacation can be anything but a holiday! It’s usually a busy month because the students go to their school club most days. They also take extra summer classes at school, cram school or here at Hario. Plus they have a lot of homework to do over the break. It’s quite different to the summer holidays that I remember back home in Ireland. In secondary school (that’s junior high school and high school all in one) the summer vacation lasts for three months, June, July and August. What’s more, because the new school year begins in September, there’s no homework to do. There are some extra classes available, but they don’t last for the whole vacation. Many teenagers in Ireland get jobs for those few months. I worked in a supermarket for two summers when I was 16 and 17. It was good experience to get out into the working world while I was still a student. I felt all grown up like a working man. It was tiring work and I felt relieved to be able to leave my job and go back to school. I remember buying video games with my hard earned money. Now, 20 years later, I still buy games every now and then! Enjoy the rest of the summer vacation everyone!

夏休み真っただ中となりました。

HARIOでも午前中から夏期講習が始まっています。

文法の夏期講習では、文法のちからを身に着け、また英会話の夏期講習では私やケビンと一対一のレッスンをうけ会話力を身に着けることができます。

日本の学生たちにとって夏休みは休みでありながら、とても忙しい月のように見えます。ほとんどの学生が部活動のために学校にほぼ毎日行っていて、また学校や塾、HARIOなどの夏期講習にも参加しています。加えて、たくさんの宿題が学校から出されます。

アイルランドの学生の夏やすみとは大きく違います。

アイルランドの中学や高校では夏やすみが３か月間あります。

９月から新学期がスタートするので、６月～８月が休みです。宿題もありません。

アイルランドの学生はこの間にアルバイトをします。私は１６と１７才の夏にスーパーマーケットでアルバイトをしました。アルバイトをするとなんだか大人の仲間入りをした気分りますよね。でもそのアルバイトがとてもきつかったので、学校が始まる９月が来た時に仕事をこれで辞められるとほっとしたものです。そして激務なアルバイトに耐えた自分のご褒美にビデオゲームを買いました。あれから２０年たった今も、お給料でビデオゲームを買っています(笑)
