Hello everyone,

Last Tuesday, I went to my daughter’s sports day at elementary school. It was warm and sunny that morning, so I found shade under the trees around the sports track. When I think about my own sports days back in Ireland, I remember it being focused on a few track and field events. So, every grade had 100m races with heats and finals. There were also long jump and high jump events. There were only a few events that we don’t see in track and field such as the egg and spoon race. It was quite different to the sports days here in Japan. Every grade has their own team events with a wide variety of activities, such as my daughter’s class relay, in which students ran their leg in groups of two, either as a double jump rope or with their legs tied together. Other events had students pushing a giant ball along the track or carrying a big stick around the track in the “typhoon” event. I never performed in any events like these at my elementary school, but they look a lot more fun than simply running a sprint. It’s a lot more team focused, rather than individual performances. The students cheered like crazy for their classmates and there’s a great sense of camaraderie in each class, win or lose. I can tell there is a focus on teamwork throughout school life in Japan. It prepares students to become important parts of teams that they’ll work with in the future. Work, family, friends, hobbies… what are the teams in your life?

先週の火曜日、小学校の娘の運動会に行ってきました。その朝は暖かくて晴れていたので、私は運動トラック周辺の木陰を見つけました。アイルランドでの自分の運動会を思い返すと、いくつかの陸上競技が中心だったことを思い出します。各学年が100m走の予選や決勝を行ったり、走り幅跳びや走り高跳びの競技がありました。「卵スプーンレース」のような陸上競技にはない少し特殊な種目もありましたが、日本の運動会とはだいぶ違いました。

日本では各学年がチーム競技を行い、娘のクラスのリレーでは二人一組で走る種目がありました。例えば、二人で縄跳びを跳びながら走るものや、二人の足を結びつけて走るものです。他の競技では、巨大なボールをトラック沿いに押して進めたり、「台風の目」という種目では大きな棒を運びながら走ったりしました。このような種目は私の小学校時代にはありませんでしたが、ただの短距離走よりもずっと楽しそうです

日本の運動会は個々のパフォーマンスよりもチーム重視で、学生たちはクラスメートを全力で応援していました。勝ち負けに関係なく、各クラスの団結力が素晴らしいと感じます学校生活を通じて、チームワークが重視されていることが伝わってきました。それは将来の仕事や家庭、友人関係、趣味においても重要な役割を果たす準備の一部なのだと思います。
