Hello everyone,

The world cup is in full swing now and Japan have played their first two matches. It’s going very well for the blue samurai so far with a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands, who are the strongest team in the group. They followed this with an impressive 4-0 win over Tunisia last Sunday. Their final group game is against Sweden this Friday. A draw should be enough to get Japan through to the next stage. However, it’s likely that the next stage’s opponents will be either Brazil or Morocco, who are both very strong. Japan will need to be ready for a big challenge ahead. I noticed that all of the matches have a “hydration break” halfway through each half. Players have a few minutes to have a drink, but the real reason for this is so advertisers can show commercials during the match. It’s the reason some american sports have quarters instead of two halves. Now that football matches are broken up into four quarters, they can have more commercial breaks. “Hydration breaks” may have been useful in hot stadiums in the past, but these days most stadiums are air conditioned and cool. I remember the last time the world cup was held in the U.S.A. in 1994. Ireland played a match in Florida against Mexico. The temperature on the field was over 40 degrees, which the Irish players couldn’t handle. Now, many stadiums have domes to keep the heat out. If Japan’s next match is against Sweden, maybe they should switch off the air- conditioning for that match.

Not long to go now before we’ll start handing out the speech homework next month! Students have a variety of reactions every time they see the homework being handed out. There’s a sense of excitement, nervousness and curiosity from the first-timers. Some of our speech veterans take their speech homework very seriously, so they can’t wait to get started. It all begins next month, good luck!

ワールドカップが真っ只中で、日本はすでに2試合を終えました。グループ最強のオランダと2-2で引き分け、ここまで「青い侍」はとても順調です。先週の日曜日にはチュニジアに4-0で快勝しました。今週金曜日の最終戦はスウェーデン戦です。引き分けでも日本は次のステージに進める可能性が高いでしょう。しかし、その次の相手はブラジルかモロッコになりそうで、どちらも非常に強豪です。日本は大きな挑戦に備える必要があります。

試合を見ていて気づいたのですが、前半・後半の途中に「給水タイム」があります。選手が数分間水を飲むための時間ですが、実際の理由は広告主がCMを流すためです。アメリカのスポーツのいくつかがハーフではなく4クォーター制なのも同じ理由です。サッカーの試合が4つの区切りに分かれることで、より多くのCMを挟めるようになりました。昔は暑いスタジアムで給水タイムが必要でしたが、今ではほとんどのスタジアムが空調完備で涼しく保たれています。

1994年にアメリカでワールドカップが開催されたときのことを覚えています。アイルランドがフロリダでメキシコと試合をしたのですが、ピッチ上の気温は40度を超えていて、アイルランドの選手たちは耐えられませんでした。

今では多くのスタジアムがドーム型で、暑さを遮断しています。もし日本の次の試合がスウェーデン戦なら、その試合だけは空調を切ってもいいかもしれませんね。

さて、来月にはスピーチの宿題を配り始めます。毎回、宿題が配られると学生たちはさまざまな反応を見せます。初めての学生はワクワク、緊張、好奇心が入り混じった表情をしています。スピーチ経験者の中には非常に真剣に取り組む人もいて、早く始めたくて仕方がないようです。すべては来月から始まります。頑張ってください
