Shopping in another language

Hello everyone,

It’s snowing! Well not really, but it’s snowing cherry blossom petals everywhere at the moment. It’s been very windy since Monday, so the cherry blossoms are disappearing fast. The sea of pink and white throughout the local parks will be all gone soon enough. Then they move on to the green leaves of spring and summer. I’m enjoying the warm weather that’s coming in now during spring, my favorite season.

At Hario this Thursday, we are going on a shopping trip with some of our students. It’s a fun trip to the supermarket to buy some groceries for their families. I will take them on the trip, and because I can’t speak Japanese, they will have to communicate in English. They will show me their English shopping lists and ask for help to find their items. I’m looking forward to our adventure!

When I first came to Japan, I was quite nervous to go shopping on my own. What if the staff ask me a question and I don’t understand? Sometimes I nodded and said yes because it sounded like I should. I soon realised that shopping in another language is just about learning a few set phrases that are used by staff and customers in most interactions. Repetition of these phrases on every shopping trip is a great way to learn a language and its useful everyday communication skills. So good luck to everyone who tries shopping in a foreign language!

雪が降っています！…と言いたいところですが本当の雪ではなく、桜の花びらが舞い散っています。月曜日から風が強いので、桜の花はどんどん散ってしまっています。公園のあちこちを覆っていたピンクと白の景色も、もうすぐ消えてしまうでしょう。その後は、春から夏へと緑の葉が広がっていきます。私は、春の暖かい気候がとても気に入っています

今週の木曜日、ハリオで何人かの生徒たちと一緒に買い物に行きます。家族のために食材を買う、楽しいスーパーへのお出かけです。私は生徒達をスーパーへつれて行きますが、日本語が話せないため、生徒たちは英語でコミュニケーションを取らなければなりません。彼らは英語で書かれた買い物リストを見せながら、商品を探すための手助けを求めるでしょう。この冒険を楽しみにしています

初めて日本に来たとき、私は一人で買い物をするのがとても不安でした。店員に何か質問されて、理解できなかったらどうしよう？そんなとき、とりあえず頷いて「はい」と言ってしまうこともありました。でも、すぐに気づいたのは、異国の言葉での買い物は、店員や客とのやり取りでよく使われる決まったフレーズを覚えることが大切だということです。買い物のたびに同じフレーズを繰り返すことで、その言語を学び、日常生活で役立つコミュニケーションスキルを身につけることができます。外国語での買い物に挑戦する皆さん、頑張ってくださいね
