Hello everyone,

It was a long weekend last weekend with the emperor’s birthday being celebrated on Monday. Due to the long weekend celebrations, people could ride the Fuji Rakuza big wheel for free for two days. It’s a great way to get a beautiful view of Mount Fuji. I often drive out to Fujikawa Gym on Saturdays for my daughter’s ballet lesson. There is a new bridge across the river that I use, and not only is it much faster, there’s a beautiful view of the scenery as you cross it. Winter is the best time of the year to see Mt. Fuji in the clear winter sky. Every time I drive past the bridge just south of here, near Uniqlo, I see many people taking selfies with the mountain in the background. Despite being cold here, it’s usually bright and sunny in winter. That’s a stark contrast to Ireland’s winter, which is usually cloudy, rainy and dark. That difference is really mood altering, so much so that they have a special day called “Blue Monday” in January, which is said to be the most depressing day of the year. This day is set after the winter vacation is over, so there is a long time to wait until the next vacation, it’s dark in the morning until 9am, it gets dark in the evening at 4pm, and there is cold, wet weather. But cheer up! Spring is just around the corner. There’s plenty to look forward to, Saint Patrick’s Day, Easter, and the Sakura which signals the arrival of warm weather. They are all on the way, so roll on Spring!

先週末は天皇誕生日が祝われ、長い週末となりました。この祝日に伴い、富士ラクザの大観覧車に2日間無料で乗ることができました。富士山の美しい景色を楽しむ素晴らしい方法ですね。

私は土曜日に娘のバレエレッスンのために富士川ジムに行くことがよくあります。川を渡る新しい橋を利用することで、時間が短縮されるだけでなく、渡る際に美しい景色を楽しめます。冬は澄んだ空の中で富士山を眺めるのに最適な季節です。この橋を南に渡るたびに、ユニクロの近くで多くの人が富士山を背景にセルフィーを撮っているのを見かけます。ここは寒いですが、冬は明るく晴れることが多いです。これは常に曇りや雨で暗いアイルランドの冬とは対照的です。この違いは本当に気分を変えるほどで、1月には「ブルーマンデー」という特別な日があり、年間で最も憂鬱な日と言われています。この日は冬休みが終わった後に設定されており、次の休みまでの期間が長く、朝9時まで暗く、夕方4時には暗くなり、寒くて雨が降る天気です。
