This morning I awoke to hear the sad news that the Queen had died peacefully Thursday afternoon UK time at her Scottish estate at Balmoral, while this wasn’t unexpected and hasn’t come as a shock for the majority of the UK, as she was 96 years old and had been visibly frail in the last couple of years.

 

But it has created a sense of a shift in the identity of the British people. Many people have come and gone from the public focus in my life, especially in recent years, but the one constant in British life is the Queen has always been the Queen, even before I was born. Reigning for 70 years, she came to the throne in 1952 witnessing massive social and cultural changes in the UK during her time as Queen.

 

So it will be strange soon to no longer see her on British stamps, coins, and banknotes as they are phased out and replaced by ones bearing the image of our new King, Charles III.

 

今朝はUKタイムズによるエリザベス女王の訃報と共に目覚めました。ニュースによるとバルモラル城で眠るように安らかに旅立たれたとのことでした。96歳という事もあり近年段々と元気がなくなっていた女王でしたので、多くのイギリス国民にとって特に予想外の出来事というわけではなかったのではないでしょうか。

 

今回の出来事をきっかけにイギリス国民のアイデンティティーにも変化があったはずです。

近年は特に様々な出来事でめぐるましくなってきた世の中ですが、唯一変わりないものと言えばエリザベス女王は私たちが生まれる前からずっとエリザベス女王であったということではないでしょうか。

 

彼女がイギリス女王の称号を継承されてから70年以上もの間、イギリスの大きな変動を見守ってくれていました。

 

今後イギリス通貨や切手には彼女ではなく、チャールズ王子の顔が印刷される日々が始まることに対して、最初は困惑することになるのではと思います。
