July is here already and it’s very hot and humid this week! We are currently experiencing a bit of a heatwave here in Shizuoka. When I was at the park near my house this morning, a man asked me “Is it too humid for you?” I told him it’s very different to my home country so it’s hard to take! It usually feels heavy until the end of September. Luckily we have air conditioners in every building here in Japan. In Ireland you won’t find any. Every building has heaters, but there’s no need for air-con. The highest temperature ever recorded in Ireland was 33 degrees, in June 1887. That’s 130 years ago! 33 degrees is pretty average for a summer day here in Japan, but it’s a record in Ireland. Usually it gets up to about 25 degrees at the height of summer. There are only a few occasions where I thought I’d like to have an air conditioner. The summer nights are always cool anyway. Ireland’s lowest ever recorded temperature is -19 degrees, but it’s usually about 5 in winter. Japan’s records are more extreme, with a record high of 42 in Tokyo, and low of – 41 in Hokkaido. I think we are lucky to have a relatively mild climate here in Shizuoka. Being near the sea gives us cooler summers and warmer winters than other parts of Japan. もう７月ですね。今週はとても熱くて蒸し暑いです。猛暑が続いています。
今朝、近所の公園にいくと、ある男性が、「蒸し暑いですか」とたずねてきました。私は「アイルランドとは暑さちがくて、耐えられない。」と言いました。９月頃までこの暑さが続きます。耐えられません。
でも！日本には、エアコンがどこにいってもあります
。アイルランドでは、どこにもありません。暖房はありますが、エアコンは必要ないのです。
アイルランドのこれまでの最高気温は１８８７年に観測された３３度です。今から１３０年も前のことです。でも日本では、３３度はほぼ夏の平均気温です。アイルランドは夏でも夜は涼しいです。アイルランドの最低気温は、－１９度です。通常、冬は、５度ぐらいです。
日本は全国の気温差がとても大きいことに驚きます。東京の最高気温は４２度、北海度の最低気温はー４１だそうです。静岡は、この中間にあたる気候なので、ラッキーだと思います。近くの海が、夏は涼しく、冬は暖かさをくれるからですね。
