Hello,

Halloween is coming this month. On October 31st every year things get a little scary all over the World. We have some nice scary decoration up here at Hario English School now. Including some terrifying ghosts floating around the reception area, watch out for them! Do you know where Halloween came from? It originally started hundreds of years ago in Ireland as a pagan festival which celebrated the end of Summer harvest. They believed that during this time the spirits and fairies were in contact with our world and we were able to communicate with the dead. That`s where the scary theme of halloween comes from. Of course now it is a lot more light hearted and you can dress up as anything, it doesnt neccessarily have to be frightening! Since the early 20th century, children have been dressing up and going from house to house and asking for a “trick or treat”. This means they would get a treat from that person or else they will play a trick on them. I will always remember halloween as a time when I would get lots of candy from trick-or-treating around my neighbourhood. Great childhood memories!

今月はハロウィンですね。

毎年１０月３１日は世界中が怖い思いをしますね。

HARIOイングリッシュスクールでも、今ちょっとこわーいディスプレイになっています。

受付けには、おばけが飛んでいるので気を付けてください。

みなさんは、ハロウィンはどこからきたのかしっていますか。

実は、ハロウィンは何百年も前のアイルランドのパガン祭りからきています。これは、夏の収穫を祝う祭りです。人々は、この時期に死者の魂が世におりてきて、彼らと会話ができると信ていました。

なのでそこから「おばけ」を連想させるこわーいイメージがつき、今では少しおどけたイメージや

おしゃれをするイベントというイメージもついてきました。

ハロウィンでは人を怖がらせる必要はありません。

２０世紀になってからは、子供達がドレスアップをして、近所をねりあるき「Trick or treat」を大人にたずねます。この意味は、いたずらをしたら、その人からご褒美をもらえるということです。わたしは小さいころ、近所の人からたくさんのキャンディーをもらったのを覚えています。それが子供のころのよい思いでとなっています。
