The origin of Halloween　ハロウィンの始まり

Hello everyone,

Happy Halloween! We began celebrating Halloween week here at Hario yesterday. Our students are arriving this week all dressed up in weird and wonderful costumes. I’ve seen some great ideas already and there’s still four more days to go! Us staff are also dressed up all week. Can you guess what costumes we are wearing? I won’t spoil the surprise, you will have to come in and see for yourself if you are brave enough. It’s very spooky in here this week!

Where does the word “Halloween” come from? This word comes from old English and means holy (hallow) evening (een). It’s a very old celebration, dating back to the 16th century in Ireland and Wales. It was originally a pagan celebration before Christianity. People believed that the ghosts of dead people came back to haunt them. That’s why people wear scary costumes to look like ghosts. It was also a time to celebrate the harvest of crops. There was plenty of food to go around, so people would go from door to door and ask for some. That’s where the modern custom of “trick or treat” comes from. It’s quite a threatening phrase that means if you don’t give us a treat, we will play a trick on you. These days children dress up in all sorts of costumes and go from house to house in their neighbourhood collecting candy. I remember collecting lots candy when I was young. It lasted for days, and I ate far too much! I think it’s for the best that I don’t do it anymore. Have a great Halloween everyone!

みなさんこんにちは。

ハッピーハロウィンHARIOでは昨日からハロウィンウィークが始まっています。生徒の皆さんは様々なコスチュームを身に着け、学校に来てくれてます。初日にしていくつかのアイディアコスチュームを見ました私達スタッフも仮装をしています。どんなコスチュームを着ているか想像できますか？ここでは言えませんが、気になる方は”勇気”を持って見に来て下さい。今週はとっても怖い雰囲気です。

ところで”ハロウィン”という言葉はどこから来たのでしょうかそれは古代イギリスでholy(聖なる）evening(夜）からきているのです。そしてハロウィンとは古くから続く祝い事で、16世紀のアイルランドとウェールズで行われていました。元々は異教徒のお祝いでした。昔は死者の霊が人々を襲いに帰ってくると信じていた為、皆幽霊に見える怖い衣装をまとうのです。またそれと同時に収穫を祝う時期でもあります。収穫された穀物を皆で分け合う様に、ドアからドアへ収穫されたものを求めていったのです。それが今現在にみられる”トリックオアトリート”というわけなんですね”お菓子をくれないといたずらするよ”なんてとても怖いフレーズです。
