Happy birthday Yuka! We celebrated her birthday this week with some delicious cake. There are three birthdays in the space of two weeks here at Hario. Sachiyo’s birthday is next in April, and my birthday is just a few days later. So there’s lots more cake to look forward to!
It was Easter Sunday last weekend. Every year people all over the world celebrate by eating chocolate eggs. The eggs were originally introduced to symbolize Jesus Christ coming back to life after he died. Over time, chocolate was introduced and now non-religious people enjoy the celebrations too. This year, Easter marks an important event in Ireland’s history. It is the 100th anniversary of the “Easter Rising”. Ireland used to be part of the U.K. In fact, Ireland only became an declared as an independent country in 1919. In 1916, during Easter week in April, around 200 Irish rebels took over places in Dublin and attempted to make Ireland an independent country. The British Army fought these people on the streets of Dublin city. The Irish rebels eventually surrendered to the British army, but these events led to Ireland’s Independence a few years later. This Easter, to mark the 100 year anniversary, there were parades around the country to commemorate the event. People in Ireland are proud to have their own nation now.
