Hello everyone,

Happy Halloween! If you visit Hario this week prepare to be terrified. There are spooky things lurking all around! Our students and staff are all getting into the Halloween spirit by dressing up this week. We’ve seen all types of great costumes, from scary ghosts, witches and mummies, to funny characters from our favorite movies. I’m sure I even saw a PLS attendance sheet walking around too. How scary!

There are several theories on where the Halloween custom started. It is thought to have come from the old Irish festival called “Samhain”, which means summer’s end. At this time of year the souls of the dead were said to revisit their homes seeking hospitality. That sounds similar to the “Obon” festival in Japan. In the 16th century, the festival included dressing up in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. People would go from house-to-house in costume, usually reciting songs in exchange for food. This has transformed into the now famous “trick or treat” line, which means if you don’t give us a treat we will trick you. In the past people always dressed up as the dead, but now there are all sorts of funny costumes to be seen. It has spread all over the world now. So come on over to Hario and if you can scare us, you might get a treat!

みなさんこんにちは。

ハッピーハロウィン今週HARIO に来る時は衣装の用意（簡単なものでも全然構いません）をお願いします。学校にはハロウィンにふさわしい飾りがあふれ、生徒のみなさんも先生も衣装を身にまといハロウィンを楽しんでいます。これまでにいろいろな衣装を見ました。怖いお化け、魔女、ミイラ、有名な映画のキャラクターなどなど。PLSの出席表が一人でに歩き回っているのも見ましたとても恐ろしいです！！

ハロウィンがどこで始まったのかというのはいくつか説があります。1つの説としてアイルランドの古いお祭りで夏の終わりを意味する”サムヘイン”が起源だと考えられていますこの時期になると死者の魂が再び家に戻ってくるとされていました。日本のお盆とにた考えですね。16世紀には、アイルランド、スコットランド、そしてウェールズではお祭りとなると着飾るのが普通でした。皆、食料との交換を求め、着飾ったまま歌を歌いながら家から家へと周りました。これが現在の”トリックオアトリート”になったようです昔は皆、死者の格好をしたようですが、今では色々なおもしろいコスチュームも見られます。そして全世界へと広がりました
