Hanami season.　花見の季節

Hello everyone,

Have you the sakura blossom yet? It’s out in full bloom now. Hanami season is here and over the course of about two weeks people are out enjoying the beautiful view. I went to Hiromi park last weekend and saw many people having picnics under the sakura trees. This practice of celebrating under the trees is centuries old and dates back to the Nara period (710-794). People used the sakura blossom as a way of determining when to plant rice. It’s like natures calendar! They also believed that there were gods inside the trees and offered sake to them. The tradition of drinking sake near the trees has lived on until now, 1,300 years later. Hanami is now celebrated in other countries too, such as China, Korea, the Philippines and the U.S.A. There are cherry blossom trees in Ireland too. They are quite common, but there isn’t any celebration when they blossom. I think Ireland is too cold to have a picnic at this time of year anyway! Enjoy the blossom while you can, I hear that this weekend will be the best time.

もう桜の花を見ましたか？今もう満開ですね。お花見の季節になり、ここ2週間、みなさん美しい景色を楽しんでいます。先週、広見公園に行きましたが、沢山の人たちが桜の木の下でピクニックを楽しんでいました。

この習慣は何世紀も前からのもので、奈良時代にさかのぼるそうです。人々は桜の花の開花を見て、いつ稲を植えるかを決めていたようです。自然のカレンダーのようですね！また、桜の木の中には神様たちがいると考えられ、神様たちにお酒を捧げていました。木のそばでお酒を飲む習慣は、1300年後の現在まで続いています。お花見は中国や韓国、フィリピン、アメリカといった世界各国でなされるようになりました。アイルランドにも桜の木があります。一般的なものですが、花がさいたときにお祭りをする習慣はありません。アイルランドではこの時期にピクニックをするのは寒すぎるためだと思います。
