Hello everyone,

It’s Spring vacation time and all of our students graduated their year at school last week. They are all excited about starting their new school year in the next two weeks. They are nervous too, especially the students who have graduated Elementary and Junior High School. It’s always nerve wracking to start at a new school, but they will eventually settle in and make new friends. In a few short weeks they will wonder why they were worried in the first place.
Spring also means that Easter is coming. The date that Easter falls on every year is different because it’s determined by the Christian calendar. This year it falls on April 5th. In Ireland everyone gives and receives chocolate eggs with friends and family. The tradition started when people would eat eggs on Easter Sunday to celebrate Jesus rising from the dead. Over time the confectionery companies had the great idea to sell chocolate eggs as a tasty alternative for children. Other strange customs appeared such as the Easter bunny, a rabbit who brings the chocolate eggs for children. People also host egg hunts, where they hide eggs and children try to find them. My parents have given me a chocolate egg every Easter for as long as I can remember. Being in Japan doesn’t stop them, they send one over to me every year!

みなさん、こんにちは。
先週、終業式がおわり、生徒の皆さんは春休みですね。
あと数週間後の始業式が楽しみですね。

でも小学校から中学生にあがる生徒さん、中学から高校にあがる生徒さんは
緊張しているようです。心配はいりませんよ。すぐになれるものです。

春がやってきたということは、イースターの季節も近づいてきたということです。
毎年、イースターの日はクリスチャンのカレンダーにより異なります。
今年は、４月５日です。
アイルランドでは、友人や家族から卵のチョコレートをもらいます。
この習わしは、イエス・キリストの復活を祝うために、イースターの近い日曜日に
卵を食べていたことから始まっています。
そこから時がすぎ、製菓会社がチョコレートを売るために思いついた方法が
この卵のチョコレートです。
他にも面白いイースターを表す象徴があります。。
「イースターバニー」は、子供たちのために卵チョコレートを運ぶウサギです。
「エッグハント」は、卵を隠し、子供たちがそれらの卵を見つけるという習わしです。
私の両親は、毎年私に、この卵チョコレートをくれます。
これは、日本に来てからも同じで、毎年この卵チョコレートを送ってきてくれます。
日本にはない、面白い習わしですよね。
