Fuji Matsuri 富士まつり

Hello everyone,

The rainy season is over, I didn`t think it was particularly wet this year, but it was and still is very humid.

Next Sunday is the fourth Sunday of July, and that means it`s the Fuji Matsuri. This is a festival which takes place around Aoba Street. Many kinds of events are held such as Fuji All Citizens Samba, where many groups of people perform a traditional dance along the street. I saw it last year and it was amazing to see so many people dancing in unison as far as the eye could see. In the evening there will be a fireworks show, and the Musical Parade of Princess Kaguya. The parade is especially popular as Fuji City is the background of the famous folk story “Taketori Monogatari” or “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”. I don`t know the full story behind this, but I have heard it`s about a girl who was found growing inside a stalk of bamboo, and she came from the moon. It`s from the 10th century and one of the oldest Japanese folk stories.

梅雨が明けました。今年はそこまで雨が降らなかったように感じますが、とても蒸し暑いですね。

7月の第四日曜日は、富士まつりがあります。青葉通り周辺で行われるお祭りです。伝統的な市民総おどりなど、たくさんのイベントがあります。私は昨年見に行きましたが、とてもたくさんの人々が見渡す限り一つになって踊る様子は素晴らしいものでした。夜には花火大会があり、かぐや姫の音楽パレードがありました。富士市は「竹取物語」の背景であり、このパレードは特に人気があります。私は竹取物語を全部知っているわけではないですが、月から来た、竹の中から見つかった女の子の物語であるということはしっています。10世紀から伝わる、最も古い民話の一つです。
