Reflections on the English Camp キャンプを振り返ってみて

Hello everyone,
How are you? It looks like the raining season is starting. Fortunately, the good weather held on for the English camp we held last weekend. You can read this blog and look at our Facebook page to get a flavour of what happened last weekend. Everyone is saying very positive things about the event so I’m happy people shared my enthusiasm for having a camp and enjoyed it.

みなさん、こんにちは。
ご機嫌いかがですか。もうつゆの季節になったかのような天気ですね。
でも先週末のHARIOイングリッシュスクールのキャンプはよい天気でした。
このブログやフェイスブックでキャンプの投稿を読む事ができます。参加したすべての生徒さんが、よかったといってくれました。皆さんが楽しんでくれたようで、私もうれしいです。

I had a few goals in mind when I was planning the camp. I wanted our students to have a chance to use English outside of the classroom. I think there were plenty of opportunities for that. The students spoke English playing outdoor games, finding objects for a scavenger hunt around Lake Tanuki and they helped Hario defeat Bowser and rescue Princess Peach by speaking English. I enjoyed talking to our students in English whilst cooking and eating together.

今回キャンプをやるうえでいくつかの目標を立てました
まずは、学校以外の場所で生徒達が「英語」使う機会を得ること。これは、キャンプ中にはいろんな機会がありましたね。アウトドアゲーム、オリエンテーションで田貫湖にあるものを英語で探したり、ピーチ姫がさらわれHARIOを助けるときも、英語でした。料理をしているとき、ごはんを食べているときなどに生徒達と英語で話ができて、とても嬉しくも思いました。

Another goal was for students to spend time in and appreciate the beautiful nature around them. I think Lake Tanuki is a wonderful place and I really enjoyed spending time there. We only saw Mt Fuji a little bit because of cloudy weather but it was still a fantastic setting for our camp. It was my hope students could learn other things at the camp too. Students learned new games, learned how to light and keep a barbeque and some camp cooking among other things.

もう一つの目標は、生徒達が美しい自然で時をすごし、それに感謝する機会を作ることです。そういう意味では、田貫湖は最高の場所であり、楽しめました。富士山は少ししか見ることができませんでしたが、それでもすばらしいキャンプでした。英語や自然だけでなく、キャンプについてもいろいろと学べたのではないでしょうか。どのように火をつけるのか、バーベキューをするのか、料理をするのかなどなど。

My biggest goal was to get to know our students better and for everyone to come away from the camp better friends. I was really pleased to see a community spirit at the camp. Cooking on barbeque grills proved to be quite difficult. It took a long time to light the fire and lots of care and attention to keep it alight. Everyone helped to make sure we could cook dinner. I was really pleased by the students co-operation and volunteering to help. I saw community spirit too on Sunday morning. The sun rose at 4:30 and students could choose to stay in bed or to get up early to see the sun rise from behind Mt Fuji. In the end, almost everyone (except Alan!) got up to see the view. The boys in my bungalow woke me up at 2:00 am, 2:30 am, 3:00 am and 3:30 am because they were excited to be a part of it.

そして最後の目標は、生徒達がこのキャンプを通して、「より分かり合える」チャンスを作ることです。皆が、グループでまとまって協力しあっている姿がとても嬉しく思いました。
バーベキューはかなり大変でした。火をつけるのも大変でしたし、その火が絶えないように観ていなければいけません。そんな火の番を生徒達が協力しあい、自分から仕事をかってでている姿に嬉しく思いました。また、日曜日の朝にもこの生徒達のまとまりを感じました。朝の４：３０に日の出を見に行くことになっていました。でもそれは自由参加でした。しかし皆が、富士山からの日の出をみるために早く起きて参加をしました。（アラン以外は・・・）
私のバンガローの男の子たちは、朝の２時、２時半、３時、３時半と３０分ごとに起きていました。それだけ楽しみだったのでしょう。

I come away from the camp with lots of fantastic memories and feeling closer to the students and staff at Hario English School. Along the way, lots of fun was had and lots of English was spoken. So, for me, I feel the camp was a big success. It looks likely that we’ll do more English camps in the future. Watch this space for information about that. このキャンプで素晴らしい沢山の思い出ができました。生徒やスタッフとの距離も縮まったような気がします。沢山の楽しいことをして、沢山の英語を使いました。私はこのキャンプは大成功だったと思います。これからもこのイングリッシュキャンプはやっていきたいですね。今後のお知らせを見逃さないでくださいね。
