I hope you`re looking forward to Golden week next week. It`s that time of the year when everyone gets some time off work to relax or go travelling. But if you want to relax, I wouldn`t recommend travelling during Golden week. There`s usually traffic jams and busy airports when everyone wants to travel at the same time. It`s still a great time for a holiday though, the weather is fantastic at this time of the year. Do you know where Golden week got its name? In 1948 the first Golden week holiday was declared by the government. The film industry experienced great spikes in their sales during that week. In 1951, the managing director of Daiei Film Co., Ltd. dubbed the week “Golden Week” based on the Japanese radio lingo “golden time,” which denotes the period with the highest listener ratings. Since then the name has stuck.

The insects are arriving with the warm weather now. This morning I had a close call with Japans most dangerous animal, the Japanese giant hornet or oszumebachi. They have a very venomous sting that can be fatal if allergic. There was a big one on our door handle outside and I almost put my hand on it! Luckily I saw it just in time, but I`ll be more wary of them in future.

皆さん、こんにちは。

来週のゴールデンウィークが待ち遠しいですね。来週は、日本中の人々がどこかにでかけ、リラックスする週ですね。でも、もし本当にリラックスしたいのでしたら、旅行はしない方がいいと思います。

道路は混んでいるし、空港にも人がごった返します。それでもお休みですから、天気がいいと最高ですね。

皆さんは、ゴールデンウィークっていう名前がどこからきたかしっていますか？

１９４８年に日本政府が始めたのがきっかけみたいです。そしてその週に映画を見る人が増え、興行成績が増えました。１９５１年に大映フィルムが、それを「ゴールデンウィーク」と名付けたと言われています。

それからこれまで、ゴールデンウィークが続いています。

夏が近づき始めたのか、虫のおとずれを感じるようになりました。今朝は、日本で一番危険といわれている虫に遭遇しそうになりました。その名も「大スズメバチ」です。

アレルギーがある人であれば、刺されて死をまねくこともあるとか。今日は、家のドアノブにいるのを発見しました。もう少しで、触るところでした。これから、注意したいと思います。

虫のことはさておいても、皆さん、よいゴールデンウィークをお過ごしください。
