Hello everyone,

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend last week. We`ve reached that nice time of the year when the weather isn`t too hot or cold. I wonder how long it will last before the summer heat arrives.

The spring vacation is here for students. While they wait for their new school year to come, they can come to Hario for afternoon English classes, a nice productive way to spend the time off. Some of our students are anxious about starting the new year, as they move from elementary to junior high, or junior high to high school. It`s always a bit nerve wracking to start anew in unfamiliar surroundings.

April 1st is just around the corner, or April Fool’s Day as it`s known. It seems to have originated in the UK hundreds of years ago, and it has caught on in many other countries since. I was unaware it had reached Japan until some of my students told me about tricks they had played on each other. In some countries in Europe, people make paper fish and stick them on each other’s backs as a trick. In the UK in 1957, the national TV station pulled a prank, known as the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest prank, where they broadcast a fake video of Swiss farmers picking freshly-grown spaghetti. The TV station was later flooded with requests to purchase a spaghetti plant, forcing them to declare the video as a prank on the news the next day!

みなさん、こんにちは。

先週の３連休はいかがでしたか

とうとう過ごしやすい季節がやってきました。暑くもなく寒くもないこの季節。

暑い夏がくるまでいつまでこの過ごしやすい天気が続いてくれるのでしょうか。

生徒達は春休みに入り、昨日から午後はHARIO で勉強しています。

有意義な過ごし方ですね。

生徒達の中には、新しい生活にドキドキしている子もいます

特に、小学校から中学校へ、中学校から高校へ進学する生徒達です。

新しい環境は最初は緊張しますね。

ところでもうすぐ、エイプリルフールがきます。

この日の起源は、何百年前のイギリスからきているようです。

そこから世界中に広まりました。

私は日本にくるまで、エイプリルフールを意識していませんでした。

ヨーロッパのある国では、紙で魚を作って、それを人の背中に張り付けるのだそうです。

イギリスでは、「スイススパゲッティの収穫」という題名の、うそ番組を作りました。

あくまでエイプリルフールのジョークとしてです。

内容は、スイスのスパゲッティ木が実をなし豊作であると。

それをみた視聴者から、その豊作である「スパゲッティの木」についての何百万件もの問い合わせが殺到してしまい、そのテレビ局は、次の日にそのスパゲッティの木が嘘であることを告白したそうです。
