I hope you are all enjoying the Winter Olympics now that they are underway in Sochi. It`s been very entertaining so far. Norway is currently top of the medal winners list, with Canada and Germany not too far behind. Japan has won one silver and one bronze medal so far, but the figure skating is yet to come so I believe they can achieve gold yet. There have been some upsets, with Japanese athletes finishing in fourth place in both the Women`s mogul and ski jump. There were high hopes that these athletes could win a medal, it`s sad to see how close they were. Especially for the woman who has competed in the mogul event in every Winter Olympics since Nagano in 1998. Since then she placed 6th, 5th, and 4th in consecutive Olympics, so she was hoping that fate would bring her a place on the podium this year.

Ireland has five athletes competing this year. They have never won a Winter Olympics medal before, but time will tell if they can do better this year. It`s rare to see Irish athletes at the Winter Olympics because there isn`t much snow in Ireland every winter, and there aren’t many mountains either. The highest mountain in Ireland is only 1,000 meters high, that`s almost a quarter of mount Fuji! Some of the Irish athletes actually live in America where there are enough mountains and snow to train every day. We had a snowboarder reach the semifinals of the snowboarding event yesterday, which was great to see even if he didn`t get a medal.

みなさん、こんにちは。

みなさん、ソチオリンピックを楽しんでいますか。

私は、かなりハマって観戦をしております。

今のところ、メダル獲得数ではノルウェーがトップのようで、次にカナダとドイツが続いています。

日本は、銀と銅メダルをそれぞれ１つずつ獲得しました。

フィギュアースケートがまだ行われていないので、金メダルは後に獲得できると思います。

少しがっかりだったのは、女子のモーグルとジャンプが４位で終わってしまったことですね。

メダルがとても期待されていたので、４位という結果は特に残念でした。

モーグルの選手は、１９９８年の長野オリンピックから、６位、５位と今回の４位という結果に

何か運命的なものを感じます。

 

私の母国アイルランドからは４人の選手が参加しています。これまで冬期オリンピックでは、メダルを獲得したことがありませんが、今回はベストを尽くせば獲得できるかもしれません。

アイルランドには雪があまり降らず、また山もないので、アイルランドから冬期オリンピック選手がでるのは稀なことです。アイルランドで一番高い山は、１０００メートルしかありません。富士山の約４分の１の高さです。アイルランドの選手は、練習のために十分な雪と山のあるアメリカに住んでいます。

昨日のスノーボードでは、準決勝まで行きましたが、メダルは取れませんでした。

でも準決勝まで勝ち残っただけでも大したものです。
