Are you staying safe with the viruses going around? Influenza is common at this time of year, and with the dreaded Corona virus in China, people are taking extra precautions. I see people wearing masks everywhere. I went to La La Port last Sunday, and I was one of the few people not wearing a mask. They are being worn almost everywhere now. At school, work, and out shopping, people want to be safe. Shops are selling out of masks and hand sanitizer all over the country. In China, there aren’t any masks left in some places, so people are wearing plastic bottles on their heads!

While it’s very common to see people wearing masks here, you won’t see any in Ireland. Even when cold and flu viruses are common, people don’t wear them. It hasn’t caught on, so never became a popular precaution against diseases. I wonder how people would react if they saw me wearing a mask back home. The first time I came to Japan I was worried that there was a problem with the air. I didn’t know why people were wearing them. I found out several reasons. Firstly, if you have an illness, it’s common courtesy to avoid spreading your disease. Also, even if you aren’t sick, they are worn for protection. Furthermore, hay-fever is very common here so they are worn to combat that, and other allergies. Personally, they are uncomfortable for me to wear. They steam up my glasses, but I’ve worn them several times when sick. I think they are a good idea to help us stay healthy. So stay safe this winter!

みなさん、こんにちは。

みなさんウィルス対策はしていますか。この時期、インフルエンザがはやる時期ですが、それとは別に中国からコロナウィルスが拡散しています。これにはさなる注意が必要で、どこへいっても皆、マスクをしています。先週の土曜日にララポートへいったら、私はマスクをしていない数すくない人の一人でした。中国では、マスクが品切れで、プラスチックボトルをかぶってマスクがわりにしている人をテレビでみました。

日本ではほとんどの人がマスクをしていますが、アイルランドではマスクしている人はいません。風邪やインフルエンザがはやっていても、マスクはしません。アイルランドに帰ったとき、私がマスクをしていたら皆どんなリアクションをするのでしょう。私が日本に初めてきたとき、皆マスクをしていたので、日本は空気に何か問題があるのではと心配しました。その時は、なぜ日本人がマスクをしているのか知りませんでした。後で理由はしりました。自分が病気である場合、それを周りに広げないため。また病気でなくてもそれにならないように保護するため、また日本では花粉症がはやっていることなど。個人的には、私はマスクをするのは好きではありません。メガネが曇るからです。でもマスクは健康でいるためにはいいアイディアだと思います。ともかくみなさん、安全にすごしてくださいね。
