Hello everyone,

It’s October already! Welcome to the month of cooler weather, brown trees, and Halloween. I’m beginning to notice the cooler evenings now and can sleep without the air-conditioner at night. People in Japan often say they look forward to eating more in Autumn. This is because we lose our appetite when it’s too hot in the summer. There are some well-known “Autumn foods” here in Japan. For example, sweet potato, sanma fish, and of course pumpkin. This concept was strange to me because we eat the same food at any time of the year in Ireland. When people ask me if we have four seasons in Ireland, I say yes and no. That’s because we have the spring and autumn colors in the trees, and there are clear transition seasons between winter and summer. However, the weather feels like there are only two seasons: cool and cold. There are only a few hot days per year, so when that happens, everyone goes out to the parks all over Ireland. In Japan, we have more time to enjoy the warm weather, so I prefer the climate here.

Now that it’s October, we can begin talking about what a special week we have in store for you on Halloween week. Starting October 25th, we ask our students to dress up and scare us with their weird and wonderful costumes. There will be plenty of fun and games on the day. We will also give them the chance to say “trick or treat!” Do you know what happens when you say this magic phrase on Halloween?

もう10月ですね！涼しい天気、茶色くなる木々、そしてハロウィンの季節がやってきました。最近、夜が涼しくなってきて、エアコンなしで寝られるようになりました。日本では秋になると食欲が増すと言われています。夏の暑さで食欲が落ちるからです。日本には秋の味覚として有名な食べ物がいくつかあります。例えば、さつまいも、さんま、そしてもちろんカボチャです。この概念は私にとっては奇妙でした。なぜなら、アイルランドでは一年中同じ食べ物を食べるからです。アイルランドに四季があるかと聞かれると、はいともいいえとも答えます。木々の色が春と秋に変わり、冬と夏の間に明確な移行期があります。しかし、天気は涼しいか寒いかの二つの季節しかないように感じます。年間で暑い日が数日しかないので、その時はみんなアイルランド中の公園に出かけます。日本では暖かい天気を楽しむ時間がもっとあるので、私は日本の気候の方が好きです。

さて、10月になったので、ハロウィン週間に向けて特別な週について話し始めましょう。10月25日から、学生たちに奇妙で素晴らしいコスチュームを着て私たちを驚かせるようお願いしています。当日はたくさんの楽しいゲームやイベントが用意されています。また、「トリック・オア・トリート！」と言うチャンスもあります。この魔法の言葉をハロウィンに言うと何が起こるか知っていますか
