Japanese restaurants in Ireland

Hello everyone,

My parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by going to a Japanese restaurant in Ireland. I saw that they had sushi, however, the most popular sushi in Europe is the rolled style, instead of the slice of fish on a bed of rice. They also had fried shrimp, ramen and fried chicken (karage style). In Ireland, raw fish is rarely eaten, however, raw, smoked salmon is popular, especially at Christmas. Because of this sushi restaurants didn’t become popular until around 2000. It became quite trendy at that time and since then quite a few Japanese/sushi restaurants have popped up all over Ireland. The last time I visited Ireland with my daughter, we went to one with my parents and brothers. The same restaurant that my parents went to last week. The Japanese waitress took our orders in English, but my daughter called out her order in Japanese. The waitress was shocked that an Irish family were with a child who was fluent in Japanese. I explained where we lived and that we were only visiting Ireland. While Ireland has become quite multicultural in the last few decades, Japanese people are quite rare, a bit like how foreigners like me are rare to see in small cities like Fuji. The food in the Irish-Japanese restaurant was good. Of course, the sushi wasn’t as good as the real thing here. So, I’m lucky to have my pick of all the great Japanese food here. As for Irish food? I found one Irish restaurant exists in Tokyo. I’ve never been there but I’m interested to see how it compares to the Irish food back home.

私の両親は結婚50周年を祝って、アイルランドの日本食レストランに行きました。お寿司も食べたそうですが、ヨーロッパで人気なのは、魚の切り身をご飯に乗せたタイプではなく、巻き寿司スタイルの方です。そのほかにも、エビのフライやラーメン、唐揚げ風のチキンなどもあったそうです。

アイルランドでは生魚を食べる習慣はあまりありませんが、生のスモークサーモンは特にクリスマスの時期に人気があります。そのため、寿司レストランが一般的になったのは2000年頃からで、その頃から流行り始め、今ではアイルランド各地に日本食・寿司レストランが増えています。

前回、娘と一緒にアイルランドを訪れた際、両親や兄弟と一緒にそのレストランに行きました。それは、両親が先週行ったのと同じお店です。日本人のウェイトレスが英語で注文を取ってくれたのですが、娘が日本語で注文をしたところ、とても驚いていまいた。アイルランド人の家族が、日本語が流暢な子どもを連れているなんて珍しいことだったのでしょう。私は私たちがどこに住んでいるかを説明し、今回はアイルランドを訪れているだけだと伝えました。
