How was your Obon Holiday?

Hello everyone,

Did you have a nice Obon week holiday? Many of our students said that they went to the cemetery to visit their family grave. There is a big difference on cemeteries here compared to Ireland. While cremation is becoming more common, many people are buried under ground. In this case, the grave and its headstone is only for one person. Often, different family members are found in different parts of a cemetery. In Japan, however, almost everyone is cremated, so the graves don’t have anyone buried underneath. In this case, the grave is shared among all family members, and each member has a wooden block with their name on it. I was also interested to find that each family name has a symbol, or crest, on their grave. One grave can commemorate many family members and ancestors without the need for more land.

Next week, it’s back to school time! The summer vacation is almost over already. I mentioned it to my students this week and was met with a collective groan from most of them. It looks like they aren’t looking forward to changing back to the school routine. They will have to finish their summer homework and start getting up early again. At least they won’t have to study much harder once they begin school because most of them have studied a lot all through the summer holiday! I wonder how energetic they will be when they come in next week. We’ll wait and see!

お盆休みは楽しく過ごせましたか？生徒の多くが家族のお墓参りに行ったと言っていました。

ここ日本とアイルランドのお墓には大きな違いがあります。アイルランドでは火葬も増えてはいるものの、多くの人が土葬されています。この場合、お墓と墓石は一人に対してのもので、家族がそれぞれ異なる場所に埋葬されることが一般的です。

一方、日本ではほとんどの人が火葬されているため、お墓の下に誰かが埋葬されているわけではありません。日本では一つのお墓を家族全員で共有し、各メンバーの名前が書かれた木の板が立てられています。また、日本の墓石には家ごとの紋章が刻まれていることを知り、とても興味深かったです。一つのお墓で多くの家族や先祖を祀ることができ、新たに土地を必要としない点も素晴らしいですね

さて、来週から学校が再開します！夏休みももうすぐ終わりですね。今週、生徒たちに学校が始まることを伝えたところ、ほとんどの子たちから大きなため息が聞こえてきました。どうやら、学校の生活リズムに戻るのをあまり楽しみにしていない様子です。夏休みの宿題を終わらせたり、早起きを再開したりしなければならないので、大変だと思っているのでしょう。ただし、夏休み中にかなり勉強をしてきた生徒が多いので、学校が始まってから特別に頑張る必要はないかもしれませんね。来週、どれだけ元気な姿を見せてくれるのか楽しみです。さて、どうなるでしょうか
