Hello everyone,

It’s almost Obon week! The holiday officially begins this Friday, August 11th with “Mountain Day”. The date for Obon varies every year because it’s based on the lunar calendar. It usually falls on the second week of August. Hario will have a week off from our usual classes beginning on Thursday. I’ve been asking our students what they plan to do during the Obon holiday. Most of them will visit their grandparents. It’s a tradtion to visit relatives during the break because people often go to the graves of their ancestors. This custom came about because this is the time when the spirits of our ancestors come back their homes. I saw that my wife’s grandmother had left food and water in the “butsudan” at our home last year. The ancestors often have offerings of food and water during traditional celebrations here. Almost every culture has some kind of celebration that honours our dead relatives. In Ireland, the celebration of dead spirits returning home is where Halloween came from.

Last weekend I went to an event in Numazu where children can meet emergency services workers and have look inside their vehicles. There were fire engines, ambulances, police cars, and army vehicles. My daughter is very interested in all of these, so she had a great time dressing up in their uniforms and pretending to drive. The emergency services workers were very friendly and showed us around. It’s a fun show and well recommended!

もうすぐお盆ですね。

一般的にはお休みは、金曜日の山の日からスタートしますね。

HARIOのお休みは木曜日から始まります。

生徒達にお盆は何をするのかと聞いたところ、ほとんどの生徒が祖父母に会いにいくといっていました。日本ではお盆休みに帰省して、先祖のお墓参りにいくのが習慣ですね。これは、亡くなった先祖の魂が、おぼんの季節に帰ってくるといわれているからです。

アイルランドでもこのような言い伝えがあります。ただ、アイルランドでは先祖の魂は、ハロウィンの時に帰ってくると言われています。

 

ところで先週、沼津でお子なわれたあるイベントに行きました。

救急隊にあえたり、救急隊が使う乗り物の中をみることができます。

例えば、消防車、救急車、パトカー、陸軍車などです。私の娘は、とても興味をもっていました。彼らのユニフォームをきて、運転席に座らせてもらって、とても喜んでいました。

救急隊の人々もとってもフレンドリーで丁寧に説明してくれました。
