Hello everyone,

Happy New Year! Did you have a good holiday? I took my first trip to Kyushu for a few days. I’m a fan of tonkotsu ramen, so I couldn’t wait to try Fukuoka’s famous specialty. It was delicious, as was the mentaiko and motsu, which are also specialties of the area. We went to Shikajima which, despite the name, has no deer, but many beautiful beaches. A couple of days later we went to Miyajima near Hiroshima, which has deer walking around the town. It’s a great time of year to visit these places for the delicious warming food.

It’s 2025, the year of the snake according to the Chinese Zodiac. These animal years aren’t so popular in Europe, although I had heard of them before. I know there is an old story of a group of animals making a journey, and the order in which they finished is the order their years are placed in. I have noticed they are more popular in Japan, as I see snakes on many of the New Year postcards we have received. In this kind of mythology, the year you were born can affect your personality, relationships and future. It’s much like the western zodiac, which follows what time of year you were born. Many countries have their own variation, for example, I was surprised to learn that Japan has mythology about people based on their blood type. According to this, people with blood types A, B, O, etc. are all different, and can interact well or poorly with other types. In Ireland, many people follow the western zodiac (Aries, Leo, etc.) and you can find horoscopes for these in all the newspapers. If you read these, you’ll notice that they say things that could be true for anyone, so it’s all just superstitions. All of these forms of fortune telling are based on old myths and in reality, we are in control of our own future, but I think people find comfort in believing there is a greater power involved in their lives. I hope 2025 is another great year for everyone.

新年明けましておめでとうございます！

素敵な休暇を過ごされましたか？私は九州に初めて行ってきました。

豚骨ラーメンが大好きなので、福岡の名物を楽しみにしていました。

本当に美味しかったですし、明太子やもつ鍋も絶品でした。また、しか島に行きました。

名前には「鹿」が入っていますが、実際には鹿はいません。でも、美しいビーチがたくさんありましたよ。数日後には広島近くの宮島にも行きました。こちらには町中を自由に歩き回る鹿がいて、とても癒されました。この時期は、美味しい温かい食べ物を楽しむには最高の季節ですね

さて、2025年は干支で「蛇」の年です。干支の文化はヨーロッパではあまり馴染みがないかもしれませんが、昔から知ってはいました。動物たちが順番にゴールする旅の話があって、その順番で干支が決まるんですよね。日本では年賀状に蛇の絵が多く描かれていることから、干支が親しまれていることが分かります。このような神話では、誕生年が性格や人間関係、将来に影響を与えるとされています。西洋の星座占いと似ていますよね。例えば、日本には血液型による性格判断があると聞いて驚きました。この説によると、血液型A、B、Oなどによって人々の性格が異なり、相性も決まるんです。アイルランドでは、多くの人が西洋の星座占い（牡羊座、獅子座など）を信じていて、新聞にも占いが載っています。でも、よく読んでみると、誰にでも当てはまるようなことが書かれているので、すべて迷信のようなものかもしれませんね。これらの占いは古い神話に基づいていますが、実際には私たち自身が未来をコントロールしているんです。でも、多くの人々が自分の人生に大きな力が関与していると信じることで安心感を得ているのでしょう。
