Hello everyone,

Now that it’s mid-September, It’s almost half way between the longest and shortest days of the year. The autumnal equinox takes place on September 23rd, and Japan even has a public holiday for it! You would think that if we were half-way between summer and winter, it shouldn’t be hot, right? Wrong. It’s still extremely hot and humid out there and it will continue until about mid-October. That’s when we can begin enjoying cooler weather, autumn food and Halloween will be on the way. Yesterday, I noticed that some businesses already have Halloween decorations up! Do they know that it’s six weeks away? I think the early decorations might be because Tokyo Disneyland begin their Halloween celebrations in September. We’ll wait until October before we start putting up our Halloween decorations, considering that Halloween is the last day of the month.

I took a trip up to Yamanashi last weekend and noticed that there were fields everywhere growing and selling grapes and peaches. I found out that many regions of Japan have their own popular fruits, Aomori for apples, Okayama for white peaches and muscats, Hokkaido for Yubari melons and berries, Ibaraki for melons and pears, Yamagata for cherries, Wakayama and Ehime for mandarins, and Hiroshima for lemons. Here in Shizuoka, strawberries and pears seem to be popular, as people can go strawberry picking and every summer my family buys some pears from Fujinomiya. Enjoy the summer fruit!

9月も半ばになり、1年の中で昼が最も長い日と短い日のちょうど中間あたりに差しかかっています。秋分の日は9月23日で、日本では祝日にもなっていますね！夏と冬のちょうど中間なら、暑くないはず…と思いきや、実際はまだとても暑くて湿度も高いです。この暑さは10月半ばまで続くそうです。

その頃になれば、涼しい気候や秋の味覚を楽しめるようになり、ハロウィンも近づいてきます。昨日、すでにハロウィンの飾り付けをしているお店を見かけました！まだ6週間も先なのに…と思いましたが、東京ディズニーランドでは9月からハロウィンイベントが始まるので、それに合わせているのかもしれませんね。私たちは、ハロウィンが月末ということもあり、飾り付けは10月に入ってからにしようと思っています。

先週末、山梨に行ってきました。あちこちにぶどうや桃の畑が広がっていて、販売もされていました。調べてみると、日本各地にはそれぞれ人気の果物があるようです。青森はりんご、岡山は白桃とマスカット、北海道は夕張メロンとベリー、茨城はメロンと梨、山形はさくらんぼ、和歌山と愛媛はみかん、広島はレモンなどなど。ここ静岡では、いちごと梨が人気のようで、いちご狩りができたり、私の家族も毎年夏になると富士宮の梨を買っています。
