Free time in the summer vacation

Hello everyone,

Summer vacation is underway at school’s now, so Hario is even busier than usual! Our summer vacation lessons are giving our students a big boost to their English skills during their time off. I think it’s great to make the most of their free time with some extra education. In Ireland, we didn’t have much to do during the summer vacation because the schools didn’t give us any homework. My lasting memories of the holiday when I was younger was building forts out of the cushions, chairs and blankets in our house. These days, kids still do that, but they prefer the digital version of building forts in Minecraft. I enjoy talking to my students about games. When I was growing up, I was a big Nintendo fan. They were the most popular video game company in Ireland as well as Japan. I remember playing games on my super famicon in the 90’s and I think those games are where I first saw examples of Japanese culture and customs. These days, I think about 90% of our students have a games console, usually a Nintendo switch. I often ask them what their favorite game is these days. What surprises me the most about the popular games, is that they are all about 10 years old! Minecraft, Fortnite, Splatoon, Animal Crossing (called Atsu Mori here), none of these games are new! It’s in total contrast to when I was growing up and technology was progressing very quickly. Every few months a new, cutting edge game would come along and everyone wanted to play it. As the progression of gaming technology has slowed down, people aren’t looking for the newest fancy graphics anymore. Just find a game you enjoy and play away without worrying if it’s old or new. Just remember kids, don’t play too much this summer. Keep on studying too!

学校では夏休みが始まり、Harioもいつも以上に忙しい日々を送っています！夏休みのレッスンでは、生徒たちの英語力を大きく向上させることができています。自由な時間を活かしてさらに英語の授業を受けるのは、とても素晴らしいことだと思います。アイルランドでは、学校が宿題を出さなかったので、夏休みに特にやることがありませんでした。子どもの頃の夏休みの思い出といえば、家のクッションや椅子、毛布で要塞（フォート）を作って遊んでいたことです。最近の子どもたちも同じようなことをしますが、今はマインクラフトなどでデジタル版の要塞作りを楽しむほうが人気ですね

私は生徒たちとゲームの話をするのが大好きです。私が子どもの頃は、任天堂の大ファンでした。任天堂はアイルランドでも日本でも最も人気のあるゲーム会社でした。90年代にはスーパーファミコンでゲームをしていて、その中で初めて日本の文化や習慣に触れたように思います。最近では、約90%の生徒がゲームコンソールを持っており、ほとんどが任天堂スイッチです。

最近の人気ゲームについてよく生徒たちに尋ねますが、驚くことに、すべて約10年前のゲームばかりですMinecraft、Fortnite、Splatoon、どうぶつの森（日本では「あつ森」と呼ばれています）。どれも新作ではありません。私が育った頃とは対照的で、当時はテクノロジーが非常に早いペースで進化していました。数か月ごとに最先端の新しいゲームが登場し、みんなそれをプレイしたがっていました。
