Hello everyone,

In terms of weather, we are in one of my favorite months of the year. The searing heat is gone, at least in the evenings, and it’s nice and warm most of the time. I like April and May too, but so many people suffer from hay fever that I hear a lot of sneezing in spring.

Now that it really feels like Autumn, I’m in the mood for some popular food of the season. Here in Japan, Popular autumn foods include the highly prized matsutake mushroom, grilled Sanma (Pacific saury), sweet and savory kabocha squash, sweet potatoes (yaki-imo),  persimmons (kaki), and chestnuts (kuri). Other seasonal favorites are newly harvested rice (shinmai), crisp Asian pears (nashi), ginkgo nuts, and warm, soul-warming dishes like oden and hot pot (nabe). The only popular Autumn food can think of in Ireland is pumpkin. Many people don’t even eat the pumpkins, they hollow them out and use them as Halloween decorations. I also remember eating far too many sweets for Halloween after going trick or treating to every house in our neighborhood. At least Japan’s seasonal Autumn food is much healthier. Whatever you eat, enjoy the food of the season!

天候に関して言えば、今は一年の中でも特に好きな月のひとつです。

焼けつくような暑さは、少なくとも夜にはなくなり、ほとんどの時間が心地よく暖かいです。4月や5月も好きですが、春は花粉症に悩まされる人が多く、くしゃみの音をよく耳にします。

すっかり秋らしくなってきた今、季節の人気の食べ物が恋しくなってきました。

ここ日本では、秋の味覚として人気なのは、貴重な松茸、焼きさんま、甘くてほっこりするかぼちゃ、焼き芋、柿、栗などです。その他にも、新米、シャキッとした梨、銀杏、そして心も体も温まるおでんや鍋なども秋の定番です。

アイルランドで思い浮かぶ秋の食べ物といえば、かぼちゃくらいでしょうか。多くの人はかぼちゃを食べることはなく、くり抜いてハロウィンの飾りに使います。近所の家を回って「トリック・オア・トリート」をして、ハロウィンのお菓子を食べ過ぎた記憶もあります。

少なくとも、日本の秋の季節料理はずっと健康的ですね。どんなものを食べるにしても、季節の味覚を楽しんでください
