Summer is fast approaching, and last weekend I visited a very popular summer fixture in Japanese culture. I went to the Yoshiwara Gion festival. It’s one of several festivals that take place throughout the summer here in Fuji. As you approach Yoshiwara main street, the first thing you notice is the sound. You can hear the music coming from floats before you see them. Several neighborhoods around Yoshiwara pull floats called “dashi” around the area. Inside, kids and adults play instruments such as taiko drums, traditional flutes and bells. The music is fast-paced and energetic. Each float has a team of people from the neighborhood who pull it around. Some of our students were in the floats this year. I saw people carrying a tree along the street, they stopped a few times to shake it. It looked like a lot of fun, but it’s hard work in such hot weather. The Yoshiwara festival had stalls set up along the street, which are found at other festivals all over Japan. These stalls sell fried chicken, beef, chocolate bananas, shaved ice, and other popular festival snacks. You can also play games at the stalls to win a prize. Since covid, it’s nice to see the festivals come back. They were cancelled for a few years during the pandemic, and the summer wasn’t as fun without them. I’m looking forward to more this year. Fuji festival will take place in July and hopefully there will be a big fireworks display that evening. Are you going to any festivals this year?

みなさん、こんにちは

夏はすぐそこまで来ていますね

 

先週は夏の風物詩でもある、吉原祇園祭に足を運んできました。

祇園祭は、富士でいくつか開かれているお祭の一つです

 

吉原のメインストリートに近づくにつれて、最初に気づくのはお祭の音です。

視界に入る前に音でお祭を感じられます

 

”だし”と呼ばれる山車を町の人々が担いで回ります

中では子供と大人がたいこや伝統的な楽器を演奏しています。

 

音楽は早くて、とても活気に溢れています

 

それぞれの山車はご近所さんたちのチームで担がれており、

今年は、生徒も何人かが山車の中にいました

 

木を運んでいるのも見ましたが、この暑い天気の中でそれはそれは大変そうでした💦

 

そして、お祭と言ったら、屋台ですよね！

もちろん屋台も道に沿ってたくさん出ていました

 

フライドチキン、牛肉、チョコバナナやかき氷！

屋台の定番たちがたくさん出ておりました。

 

中には、商品が貰えるゲームもありました

 

コロナ渦だったのでお祭りが戻ってきたのはうれしいですね

ここ数年間はお祭りなしの夏だったので、夏という感じがしませんでしたよね・・・

 

7月には富士まつりも開催が予定されております

夜空に綺麗な花火が打ち上げられるのが楽しみでなりませんね
