Fancy a cuppa?

In Britain, we are obsessed with tea, and it has been woven into a part of our cultural identity since the 18th century. We drink about 60 Billion cups of tea a year, that’s about 900 cups for every Man, Woman, and Child in the country.

Even breaking my own habit of drinking as much tea has felt odd since returning to Japan, not that finding tea here is a problem. It’s just that culturally tea is so commonly found at home, at work, or socially it took no effort to find yourself with a cup of tea in your hand on almost any occasion, wherever you are, and at whatever time of day.

The earliest known historical reference to Tea by an Englishman was by Mr. R. Wickham who was stationed here in Japan in 1615, as an agent for the East India Trading Company, asking a colleague in China to send him “a pot of the best sort of chaw”, chaw being a phonic approximation for “Chah” the local Cantonese dialect for Tea.

One of the biggest debates on Tea since the mid-20th century is if you should pour milk into the cup before or after the tea which has continued to split public opinion (I lean toward putting my milk in after the tea myself). But with both sides stating various scientific or etiquette reasons as to why each is the superior way of taking your tea, there is no end in sight to resolving the debate.
