Hello everyone,

Now that we are over half-way through February, the Hario spring campaign is well under way. We are already welcoming new students and they are enjoying the Hario experience. I’m sure there are more new students to come, so I’m looking forward to the rest of the campaign!

It was Valentine’s Day last Friday, which means that girls give chocolate to boys. This custom for Valentine’s Day only exists in Japan. In Europe, both men and women give Valentine’s gifts to their partner as a romantic gesture. When I first came to Japan, I was surprised to hear that girls give chocolate to many boys and men that they know. They could be friends, relatives, colleagues, teachers, classmates, and so on. There is also the custom of “tomo-choco”, which is giving chocolate to girls who are friends. Giving chocolate to boys and girls?! That means there is a lot to make. Luckily, the 11th was a national holiday, so many of our students took the opportunity to make chocolates for everyone on that day. One student even told me that she stayed up late the day before Valentine’s making cookies for everyone. Boys must remember who gave them chocolate, because March 14th is White Day, when it’s time to repay the favor and give the girls some candy in return. This day was created in 1977, by a Fukuoka-based confectionery company, Ishimuramanseido. It caught on, and has been a great success for candy companies all over Japan. White Day hasn’t caught on in Europe. I think it’s too close to Easter, when everyone is busy eating chocolate eggs anyway. I don’t think we need a special day to eat chocolate, I just eat it whenever I like. Which is often!

2月も半ばを過ぎ、ハリオの春キャンペーンが順調に進んでいます。

新しい生徒たちを迎えて、彼らはハリオ体験を楽しんでいます。まだまだ新しい生徒が来るのを楽しみにしていますので、これからのキャンペーンが楽しみです！

先週の金曜日はバレンタインデーでした。日本では、女の子が男の子にチョコレートを渡す習慣があります。このバレンタインデーの風習は日本にしかありません。ヨーロッパでは、男女ともにロマンチックなジェスチャーとしてパートナーにバレンタインギフトを贈ります。初めて日本に来たとき、女の子がたくさんの男の子や男性にチョコレートを渡すという話を聞いて驚きました。友達や親戚、同僚、教師、クラスメートなど、いろいろな人に渡します。また、「友チョコ」という友達の女の子にチョコレートを贈る習慣もあります。男の子にも女の子にもチョコレートを渡すなんて！たくさん作らないといけないですね。

幸い、11日は祝日だったので、多くの生徒たちがその日を利用して皆のためにチョコレートを作りました。一人の生徒は、バレンタインデーの前日に遅くまでクッキーを作っていたと教えてくれました。男の子たちは、誰がチョコレートをくれたか覚えておかなければなりません。なぜなら、3月14日はホワイトデーで、お返しとして女の子にキャンディーを贈る日だからです。この日は1977年に福岡の製菓会社、石村萬盛堂によって作られました。すぐに広まり、日本中のキャンディー会社にとって大成功を収めました。ホワイトデーはヨーロッパには浸透していません。イースターが近すぎて、みんながチョコレートの卵を食べているからだと思います。チョコレートを食べるための特別な日は必要ないと思います。私は食べたいときにいつでも食べます。というより「しょっちゅう」ですけどね
