If I was to talk about British food you would probably imagine I would talk about fish and chips, roast dinners, and steak pies.

 

Though I do love all the above, one of the most popular foods in the UK is curry, specifically one named Chicken Tikka Masala which has become known as the UK’s unofficial national dish. It consists of marinated boneless chicken pieces that are traditionally cooked in a tandoor and then served in a subtly spiced tomato-cream sauce.

 

 

While there is some speculation about its origin, some say it originated in Punjab, India. But it is commonly believed to have been invented in the 1970s by a Bangladeshi chef in Glasgow, Scotland. To please a grumbling customer who believed his curry to be too dry, the chef added a mild tomato sauce to his Chicken tikka. Becoming the first widely accepted example of fusion cuisine and ironically several companies in the UK now export the dish back to Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh.

 

In numerous surveys of the British people’s favorite dishes, it almost always ranks in the top 10 and several times has topped this list.

イギリス出身の私がイギリスの食事について語るとなると、ほとんどの人が”どーせフィッシュアンドチップスや焼いた食べ物、ステーキパイ”などについて話すんでしょ！とお思いになるかもしれません。

 

これらの食べ物はもちろん好きですが、実は最近水面下で人気が出始めているのがチキンティッカマサラカレーだということをご存じでしたか？？

 

そのカレーの中には、ちょっとピリ辛のトマトクリームソースがかかっていて伝統的な調理方法で調理された、骨なしチキンのマリネが入っています。

 

インドのパンジャブという地域発祥の料理だと思われがちですが、実は1970代にスコットランドのグラスゴーという地域出身のバングラディシュ人シェフが発明したと信じられているんです。

カレーが乾燥しているとクレームを付けてきたお客さんを喜ばすために、シェフがカレーにトマトソースを入れて程よいマイルドさにしたのがきっかけだと言われています。これが最初のフュージョン料理として広く知られており、なんとも皮肉なことに現在ではUKのいくつかの会社がパキスタン、インド、バングラディシュに逆に輸出してるとか。。

 

今では、UKのお気に入りの食事ランキング TOP10 には常にランクインしているほか、時には1位に輝くこともあるくらいの大人気料理にまでなっています。
