It looks like the height of summer is almost here already. The rainy season ended unusually early, so now we have hot and humid weather until September at least! Even at 7AM the sun feels heavy as I walk with my daughter. Luckily, I only walk halfway to her school. She joins her friends to walk the rest of the way with them. So I can get back to the safety of the air conditioner at home. However, the Japanese government has been asking people to conserve energy recently to avoid blackouts. So we need to use air-con and lights as little as possible at the moment. They asked people in Tokyo to avoid using lights between 3 – 6PM. I can’t survive without air conditioning at the moment. I wonder how people handled it in the days before it was invented.

There was a general election in Japan yesterday. It came just days after the shocking assassination of former prime minister Abe. Most of the country was still in shock after the killing. This country has such a low rate of gun crime. There were 9 gun related deaths in 2018, for example, compared to the 39,740 in the U.S. in 2018. Japan has proper laws and regulations in place so that not everyone can buy a gun easily. In the U.S. on the other hand, it’s very easy for any adult to walk into a store and buy a gun. In my home country of Ireland, gun laws are very similar to Japan. Some farmers can buy guns to hunt pests, such as rabbits, to protect their crops. But otherwise, it’s very difficult to get one. These laws make sense, as people have the right to feel safe on the streets. I appreciate living in such a safe country that has common sense when it comes to weapons.

みなさん、こんにちは！！　アランです。

真夏がどんどん近づいてきたみたいですね！

今年の梅雨は予想以上に早く終わり、じめじめとした暑さがこれから9月まで続きますね。

早朝に娘と外を歩いていると、まだ7時なのに太陽の暑さを既に感じています。。。

 

最近は娘が友達と一緒に登校してくれているので、

私は、学校まで半分の道のりを送り届けるだけで済み、クーラー完備の安全地帯（家）にすぐに戻れます。ｗｗ

 

今年の夏は日本政府から、ブラックアウト予防として電力節約の呼びかけがあり、

クーラーと電気を必要最小限で使用しなければなりません。

東京では、15:00~18:00の間で特に節電を呼びかけているそうです。

 

クーラーなしの生活なんて私には到底想像もつかないので、クーラーが存在しなかった時代の人々はどうやって

生活していたのかな？なんて思う今日このごろです。

 

先日は選挙でしたが、安倍元総理の悲しい事件があったばかりで、ショックから抜け出せない人々も多いこととでしょう。

日本では銃に関係する犯罪や事件は非常に少なく、2018年にはアメリカで39,740件の事件があったのに対して、日本はたった9件だけでした。

 

というのも、日本にはとても厳しい規則や法律があるので、

そう簡単に銃を所持、使用することができないというところでしょうか。

アメリカはというと、誰でも簡単に銃を扱っているお店に出入りして、銃を購入することが可能です。

 

私の故郷のアイルランドでは、日本と似たような銃に関する厳しい法律があり、

農家の方が農作物を守るために、うさぎなどの害獣を駆除することを目的として銃を所持することが許可されている以外は、

銃を所持することが難しい状況です。

 

人々が安全を肌で感じながら生活するためには、このような法律が必要ですよね。

私は、アイルランドや日本のような銃規制や安全に対する理解がある国で生活ができることに感謝しています。
