Another fun shopping trip

Hello everyone,

We had another English shopping trip with one of our classes last Monday. The students really enjoyed themselves finding the things on their lists. They learned a lot of new food vocabulary. Many kinds of food are similar in English and Japanese, where the word is changed to katakana, but there are some that have no English word because they are so rare outside of Japan. For example, how do you say “furikake” in English? The best way to say it is with a simple description, it’s seasoning for rice so, “rice seasoning”. Nori is another one that’s rarely seen in the west, it translates as “seaweed”. It’s interesting that although Ireland is a coastal country with lots of seafood, we never eat seaweed. You can see it growing in the sea all around the country, yet we never tried eating it! Also, you can translate “natto” to “fermented soybeans” to give it a descriptive name. However, once you know what natto is, it’s much easier to just call it by its original name of natto. Just remember it isn’t nuts like I thought when I first heard of it. Our students also learned a lot of other shopping vocabulary, such as the packaging of each item. Does it come in a box, a jar, a pack, a bunch, a loaf, etc. I asked them where we could find their items and what they were buying. Once we got back to Hario we reviewed their purchases and figured out if they had any meal recipes. They told me when they planned on eating their food, breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We also chatted about the prices, are supermarkets getting more expensive these days? It’s a fun learning experience to get out of the classroom sometimes and use English out in the real world.

先週の月曜日、クラスの生徒達と英語のショッピング旅行に行ってきました

生徒たちは買い物リストの品物を探しながら楽しそうに過ごしていて、新しい食べ物に関する英単語をたくさん学ぶことができました。日本と英語で似ている食べ物の名前もあれば、海外では珍しすぎて英語に訳しづらいものもありますね。

例えば、「ふりかけ」を英語でどう言えばいいか？

簡単に「ライスシーズニング（ごはん用の調味料）」と説明するのが良い方法ですね。それから、「海苔」は「シーウィード（海藻）」と訳されますが、西洋ではほとんど食べられません。アイルランドは海に囲まれた国で海鮮料理が多いのに、海藻を食べる習慣がないのは不思議ですね。見ることはできるのに、食べようとしたことがないなんて！「納豆」も「fermented soybeans（発酵した大豆）」と説明できますが、知ってしまえば「納豆」で伝わります。ただ、初めて聞いたときはナッツだと思ってしまいました。

また、生徒たちは箱や瓶、パック、束、ローフなど、商品ごとの包装の名前やショッピングに関する単語を学びました。みんながどこで品物を買ったのか、何を手に入れたのか教えてくれました。ハリオに戻ってからは、購入したものを確認して、それを使って何か料理を作れるかどうか話し合いました。そして、朝食や昼食、夕食のどのタイミングで食べる予定なのかを教えてくれました。さらに、値段についても話題になりましたが、最近スーパーマーケットが値上がりしているのでしょうか
