Hello everyone,

I hope you’re have a good week. We’ll see many of you at the Christmas party this Sunday. It should be lots of fun! Last Friday, Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa died. There was a memorial service for him this week in the World Cup stadium in South Africa and hundreds of leaders from around the world came to pay tribute to him, including the last 4 UK prime ministers and the Japanese crown prince. Nelson Mandela was one of the most respected people on the planet and one of the biggest world political figures of my lifetime.

よい一週間をお過ごしですか。日曜日のクリスマス会には、沢山の生徒さんが参加しますね。

先週の金曜日に、南アフリカの元大統領であるネルソン・マンデラ氏が亡くなりました。

今週は、南アフリカのワールドカップスタジアムで彼の告別式がおこなわれます。

世界各国の何百人ものリーダーが参列します。もちろんイギリスの大統領や日本の皇太子様もです。

ネルソン・マンデラ氏は、私が一番尊敬する人であり、一番偉大な政治家でした。

 

He was a black man who grew up in South Africa which at the time was controlled by the white European minority. They ran the country, owned most of the land and set up a system called ‘apartheid’, where black and white people were separated and only white people had certain rights, like the right to vote. Nelson Mandela trained as a lawyer and got involved in politics and joined the African National Congress (ANC), which he later became the leader of. He fought the South African government for equal rights and freedom for everyone in South Africa. For this, they called him a terrorist and put him in prison for 27 years. After decades of international pressure he was released in 1990. Remarkably, he forgave the white minority government who put him in prison and helped them to organise free elections for everyone. In 1994 he became the first black president of his country. He said at the time he wanted South Africa to be a ‘rainbow nation’ where people of all colours were free and treated equally. I find his story and the story of South Africa extraordinary and positive.

 

彼は、南アフリカで育った黒人で、彼が幼いときは、白人の欧州国に支配されていました。

白人が国を支配し、アパルトヘイトという政策を実行しました。これは、黒人と白人を差別し、白人だけがたとえば投票権のような、権利を持っていました。

ネルソン・マンデラは、弁護士としての訓練をうけ、政治にかかわるようになり、反アパルトヘイトの政策集団に加入し、後にその党のリーダーとなりました。彼は、平等と自由をもとめて、南アフリカと戦いました。

そのことから彼らは彼をテロリスト扱いをし、彼は２７歳のときに刑務所に入れられてしまいました。

数十年後に、他の国々からの圧力をうけ、１９９０年に彼は釈放されました。

驚くべきことに、彼は刑務所へいれた白人達を許し、南アフリカ国民全員に、選挙権を与えるために

国を助けました。１９９４年に、彼は黒人として初めての南アフリカの大統領となりました。

彼はその時に、南アフリカを「虹の国」にしたいと言っていました。虹のように、どんな肌の色をしようと

自由で平等である国に。

彼のこれらのストーリーと南アフリカの歩みは並外れて素晴らしいですね。

 

When I was a child, my first memory about South Africa was watching a TV show called Blue Peter. The two presenters, one black and one white, went to South Africa and explained about apartheid. They showed a bus. The white presenter could go in the front but the black presenter had to enter at the back. The bus conductor, if he couldn’t decide if you were white European or not, had a test. He put a pencil in your hair and if it didn’t fall out you were deemed to be black (because black people’s hair is ofter thicker and curlier than European people) and had to enter at the back. As a child I couldn’t understand why anyone would have such a silly and inhumane system. Thanks to Nelson Mandela and others, this system no longer exists. I’ve read a lot of quotes from Nelson Mandela this week, but this, I think, is my favourite:

“To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others”

私は子供の時の最初の南アフリカの記憶は、”Blue Peter”というテレビをみていた時でした。

そのテレビのプレゼンターが白人と黒人の二人で、彼らは南アフリカへいき、アパルヘイトについて説明をしていました。彼らはバスをみせて、白人のプレゼンターは前のドアから乗ることができ、黒人は後ろのドアからしか乗ることができませんでした。バスの運転手が白人かどうかわからないときは、テストをしました。運転手が髪に鉛筆をおき、もし鉛筆がおちなかったら、その人は黒人とみなされます。（なぜなら、黒人の髪はたいていにして厚く、カールがかかっているから）そうすると、後ろのドアからしか入ることができません。

とプレゼンターが言っていました。

私は子供のとき、なぜこんなバカな非人間的なことをするのか理解ができませんでした。

ネルソン・マンデラと他の人々のおかげで、アパルトヘイト政策はなくなりました。

今週、ネルソン・マンデラの言葉の本をたくさん読みました。その中で、これが私が一番好きな言葉です。

 

「自由であるということは、己の鎖を脱ぎ捨てるだけでなく、他にの自由を尊重し、向上させるような生き方をすることである」
