What’s the Population of your Country?

Hello everyone,

This week at Hario we are switching to online lessons for many of our classes. We already did it last year, so it’s less daunting to make the switch this time. We already know everything that’s possible in an online lesson. It’s almost as good as being in the classroom. Our students can stay safe and still learn English with us, so this is the best thing to do during the pandemic. Of course, I’m looking forward to seeing them again in person once we get back to normal. I know the technology for video calls is over a decade old now, but it still amazes me what we are capable of. To get a group together from anywhere in the world is a wonderful thing. I recently had a video call with my friends around the world. The time zones were amazing! It was morning in the U.S.A. and Canada, afternoon in Ireland and the U.K., and evening in Hong Kong and Japan. My friends from school have really spread out around the world. It’s no wonder we see Irish names in every country. In the U.S. there are over 30 million people with Irish heritage, so it’s very common to see surnames such as O’Connor and Kelly. Compare that with Ireland’s population of only 5 million! Actually Ireland’s population reached exactly 5 million people last week. My mother sent me photos of the official population counter at 4,999,999 and then 5,000,000. It’s such a small number compared to Japan at 126 million. Will Ireland ever catch up? 今週は、いくつかのクラスで対面授業からオンライン授業へ移行されました。去年もオンライン授業を行っていたので、オンラインへの移行は去年よりスムーズに行えました。生徒達は安全に英語を学ぶことができます。これが最善の方法だと思いますが、また感染が和らいで皆さんと授業できる日を心待ちにしています。

最近のテクノロジーの進歩には驚かされますが、最近、世界中に住んでいる友人たちとビデオ電話をしました。時間差がものすごいです。アメリカとカナダは朝、アイルランドとイングランドはお昼、香港と日本や夜でした。私の学生時代の友人は世界に散らばりました。だから、あらゆる国でアイルランドがルーツの名前に会います。アメリカは今、３０００万人のアイリッシュにルーツを持つ人が住んでいます。なので、オコナーやケリーなどの名字の人が多くいます。それに比べてアイルランドの人口は５００万にしかいません。先週、５００万人ぴったりの人口になりました。母が、公式の人口を表すカウンターが４９９万９９９９人から、カウントが５００万になった時の写真を送ってきました。１億２６００万人の人口がいる日本に比べれば、アイルランドは本当に人口が少ないです。アイルランドはいつか、日本の人口に追いつくでしょうか
