A strong typhoon swept through Kyushu last weekend. They are common at this time of year, and especially strong in west Japan. Fortunately for us, last weekend’s typhoon didn’t come as far as Shizuoka. As the seasons get ready to change, the weather is becoming unpredictable now. We have more frequent showers and thunderstorms this month. There will likely be more typhoons too. Usually when one comes to Fuji, it has lost a lot of its strength by the time it gets here. They come from the east, so become weaker as they travel across Japan. I think Ireland is a much windier country than Japan. We have more frequent “storms” in Ireland. A storm refers to strong wind and rain, but isn’t as strong as a hurricane. The problem is, they happen so often. Anytime I return to Ireland, I think it’s very windy. They give each storm a name beginning with a letter of the alphabet, so the first storm could be named “Alan”, and the next one is “Brenda”, and so on. They make a list of names every year, so people can keep track of how many storms there have been. For me, Japan is usually quite mild, and strong winds rarely happen. Of course, we get typhoons every now and then, but a usual day is calmer than back in Ireland. They had a cool summer there this year too. While the rest of Europe had a big heatwave, Ireland stayed unusually cool throughout summer. My parents told me that they had to turn on the central heating last week! Temperatures dropped to only 16 degrees, which is much cooler than usual. Enjoy the rest of September and watch out for stormy weather.

みなさん、こんにちは。アランです。

先週は大型の台風が九州地方を通過しました。この時期、日本の沖縄、九州、中国四国地方ではよく台風がおきます。幸運にも静岡には台風による被害はありませんでした。季節の変わり目では天気の変化が予想できないことがあります。今月は急にどしゃぶりになったり、雷がなったりが多々あります。台風も多くなる季節です。富士市に台風が来る頃には、つねに力を蓄えて大きな台風になっています。アイルランドは、日本よりもはるかに風が強いです。よく「嵐」が起ります。嵐は強風と雨をもたらしますが、ハリケーンほどではありません。問題は、すごく頻繁に起こることです。私がアイルランドに帰ると、いつも強風です。アイルランドでは、嵐にアルファベット順に名前をつけます。たとえば、最初の名前はAlan、つぎの嵐はBrendaなどです。毎年、嵐の名前がリストに残るので、どれだけの数の嵐が来たのか確認できます。私にとっては、日本の気候は穏やかで強風がめったに起こらないように思います。もちろん、台風は別ですが、日常の気候はアイルランドより断然穏やかです。今年もアイルランドの夏は涼しいです。先週は１６度だったそうです。これは例年に比べると低いです。ということで、皆さん、嵐に気を付けながら残りの９月を楽しんでくださいね。
