This weekend looks as if it could be one of the hottest on record in the UK with temperatures set to peak at more than 35C in the south, central, and east of England as an extreme heat weather warning is being applied from between Sunday to the following Tuesday.

 

 

With even some warnings of close to 39C, this is for a country where most people have no air conditioning in their homes and commonly are not prepared for these high temperatures.

 

Most years in the UK we only have about 2 or 3 weeks in the summer when the weather does become uncomfortably hot so most people do not invest in air conditioning instead relying on fans, ice packs, and other ways to keep cool during that short time. With many shops selling out of fans quickly as the heat rises and reports of high pressure on the health services due to the increase in heat-related health issues.

 

But in recent years, there has been an almost yearly increase in the temperature as well as the frequency of these peak temperatures through the summer. With the UK having to adapt to this new climate I think it won’t be long before air conditioning will become much more commonplace in the UK household as the increase in discomfort and also health worries mount for vulnerable patients.
