Be wary on April 1st! 4月1日は要注意！

Hello everyone,

It’s the spring vacation! All of our students are now on their holiday and many of them are making the most of the break by brushing up on their English here at Hario. We have special spring grammar classes here in the mornings. It’s a great chance to use their free time and catch up on English to prepare for the new school year. The new school year begins in April, whereas in Ireland it begins after the summer vacation in August or September. We don’t get homework during the vacation in Ireland either. Irish students are expected to study during the vacation using their own routine, which means many students don’t study for about two months. They often get part-time jobs during the vacation. I worked at a supermarket one summer when I was 16. In the summer before my final year of school I didn’t get a job, and went to special summer classes to study instead. I remember studying French with a native French teacher for the first time at these classes. The first time hearing a native speaker was interesting. It was difficult to understand her at first but it really helped to develop my French skills. That all happened many years ago, and through lack of practice, I have lost most of my French! I have to concentrate on learning Japanese now.

Be wary next Monday. That means you should stay alert and not be tricked easily. That’s because it’s April Fool’s Day. On April 1st people around the world try to play practical jokes on each other. This tradition has been going on for hundreds of years. In Ireland, it was traditional to give the victim an “important letter” to be given to someone else. That person would then ask the victim to take it to someone else, and so on. The letter when finally opened contained the words “send the fool further”. When your practical joke is revealed, it’s tradition to shout “April Fool’s” at the victim. Have you ever played a practical joke on anyone?

今は春休みですね。多くの生徒たちはHARIOで英語の勉強を頑張っています。日中春期講習を行っています。

自由な時間を使い新学期に向けて英語の苦手をつぶしています。

4月に新学期が始まりますが、アイルランドでは夏休み後の8月か9月に新学期は始まります

アイルランドでは休暇中の宿題もありません。

生徒たちは自分のペースで勉強するように言われます。つまり、約二か月間勉強しないということになります。

大体の人は休みの間アルバイトをします。

私は16歳の時の夏にスーパーでアルバイトをしました。

最終学年の年にはアルバイトはせず、勉強するために補講に行きました。

その中でネイティブのフランス人の先生とフランス語を勉強したのを覚えています。

初めて聞くネイティブの発音は面白いです。始めはよくわかりませんが確実にフランス語力があがります。何十年も前のことで、最近は練習していないこともあり、フランス語を忘れてしまいました！今は日本語の勉強に集中しなければなりません。

来週の月曜日は要注意です。だまされないようにしなければなりません。なぜならエイプリルフールだからです。4月1日は世界中でだましあいます。この風習は何百年も前から続いています。アイルランドでは「important letter 」というものをだまされた人に渡し、どんどんほかの人に渡していきます。手紙は最後に開けると「send the fool furether」（愚かさを遠くへ持っていけ）と中に書かれています。あなたの上手なウソがばれると、だまされた人に向かって「エイプリルフール！」と叫ぶのがおきまりです。
