Hello everyone,

I hope you’re enjoying the milder weather now that it’s March. It feels a lot warmer these past few days. Last week I talked about the cold weather on its way to Ireland. There was a blizzard and about 20cm of snow fell in Dublin. It doesn’t sound like much, but the strong wind and snow meant that everyone got three days off work and school from Wednesday to Friday! The Irish government warned people against going outside in the sub-zero temperatures and icy roads. I saw Dublin airport on Japanese NHK news, because flights were cancelled. There was a shortage of bread in shops because people were panic buying all of the bread they could find. Some stores even got looted by criminals, because there weren’t any staff or police there to stop them robbing the shops. I have never experienced such cold weather in Ireland before, and don’t remember getting any days off! Oh well. At least we can enjoy the warm spring here.

If you come into Hario now you’ll notice a lot of green everywhere you look. Shamrocks, Leprechauns, green, white and orange flags. Why? That’s right, Saint Patrick’s Day is coming! March 17th is the biggest celebration of the year for Ireland. People all over the World celebrate Ireland and it’s culture by having street parades and drinking Guinness. Although Ireland is a small country with a population of only 4.5 million, we have spread out all over the World. You can find parades in almost every big city. Tokyo will have its parade on the weekend of 17th/18th of March. I might have a chance to see it this year. We have lots of fun in store for our students next week. Remember to wear something green. It’s the national colour of Ireland, and it’s on the flag to symbolise the nature of our country. There are a lot of green fields, forests and mountains wherever you go. That’s why all of our sports teams wear green too.

See you next week,

Alan
