Hello everyone,

It’s been a good week for Irish sport! Last week, Ireland’s soccer team beat the World Champions Germany 1-0 in the Euro Championship qualifiers. That means Ireland will have to play off against one more team and win to qualify for the Euro Finals next year. The last few years have been poor for the Irish team, so I hope they can get back on good form soon. In rugby, Ireland beat France on Sunday to finish top of their group after winning all four games. It’s a relief to have beaten France, because the losing team of that game must face New Zealand in the quarter finals. Ireland put on a strong performance against France and won convincingly. We will play against Argentina in next Sunday’s quarter final. Ireland have never progressed beyond the quarter finals in the Rugby World Cup. I hope that they can manage it this year, they are looking strong in this tournament, so I have my fingers crossed for Sunday! Commiserations to Japan, who came so close to qualifying, but didn’t quite make it. Japan needed Samoa to beat Scotland in their group game on Sunday. Samoa were winning the game, but Scotland came back and won the game right at the end, breaking Japanese hearts. Japan are the only team in Rugby World Cup history to win three group games and not qualify for the quarter final. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but I think they’ll come back stronger in the next World Cup as the host nation.

Here at Hario this week we are making our decisions as to who will go to our speech contest in November. It’s a tough choice because we have so many students with speeches that only a small percentage will go to the contest. Our students should keep in mind that writing and performing a speech in something to be proud of regardless of the contest. They make their parents, teachers and friends proud of them when they perform their speech, whether it’s at Hario, at school or at home.

みなさんこんにちは。

最近はアイルランドのスポーツの面においていいことが続いています。

まず先週、アイルランドのサッカー代表がユーロ予選においてドイツから勝ち星をとりました。これにより、あともう1試合のプレーオフを戦い、勝つことが出来ればユーロ本大会に進むことができます。ここ数年はアイルランドはいい成績を残せていませんでしたので、強い時のアイルランドにまた戻ってほしいと思います。

ラグビーでは、フランス戦に勝利し、予選の全試合を全勝し1位での通過を決めました。もしこの試合に負けていたら準々決勝で強豪のニュージーランドと闘わなくてはいけなかったので勝ててホッとしました。この試合、アイルランドは素晴らしいパフォーマンスを見せてくました。次の日曜日、準々決勝をアルゼンチンと対戦します。これまでアイルランドはラグビーワールドカップで準々決勝より上に行ったことがありません。予選を見ていると強いチームができているようなので日曜日の試合に勝てるよう祈っています。そして今年こそは準々決勝の壁を越えてもらいたいと思います。

残念ながら日本代表は惜しい所まで行きましたが予選敗退となってしまいました。日本はサモアがスコットランドに勝たなければならないという条件がありました。途中までサモアが勝っていましたが、最後の最後でスコットランドが逆転してしまいました。日本は予選の試合で3勝をしましたが予選突破できませんでした。そのようなチームはワールドカップ史上初めてだそうです。ただ次回のワールドカップのホスト国として強くなってほしいと思います。

そしてハリオでは、11月に行われるスピーチコンテストの出場者の選考中です。数多い生徒さんの中から数パーセントの生徒さんしか選ぶ事ができないのでとても大変な選考です。今回コンテストに出る、出ないは関係なく、スピーチを一生懸命取り組んでくれたことに誇りを持って下さい。世界に1つだけのスピーチです。ハリオで、お家で、学校で。どこでスピーチをしたとしてもそのスピーチは素晴らしいものにちがいありません。それだけは覚えておいて下さいね。
